Tranquillity on the Mekong, a photo from Louangphabang, North

Photographer's Note

Another sunset photo from the Mekong River shore in Luang Prabang, taken on the same day I arrived. I was there for 3 weeks in December and January. It turned out that this was a really prolific time for me and sunsets. I ended up spending another 3 months there in April, May and June. During this time period I got only one decent sunset photo. One of the reasons for this was that the sun had moved and was no longer setting at the "end of the river" so to speak. Another reason was because that for that time period the sky is heavily laden with smoke from burning in preparation for the hillside rice planting. For a larger view: Click Me

A little story: There are many boatmen that will take you on the river for an hour during the sunset. Naturally they will approach you looking for business, but I must be a frustrating tourist because I much prefer the shore for photos. One of these boatmen in his pitch told me that he would get me “closer to the sun”! mmmmmmm......I am still puzzling over the logic........maybe he is right!

Wonderful capture of this evening scene. the setting sun's spreading light is wonderful. The foreground is little darker but it is obvious in these scenarios. Nice colors with sound ambiance, nice capture,

Hi Steve,

Very nice shot and interesting note with personal experience. Sharp and well composed with the sun in the middle and the several boats leading to it. Nice with different types of boats. Good exposure, and the pretty rays are the icing on the cake.

Wonderful sunset on Mekong. Very popular place when all tourists come to make photos, is from Phu Si, like this . Marvelous colours. And I like the view of the long boats. I went by such a one from Thailand to Louang Prabang. It was great fun! fantastic atmosphere. here mekong is so wide. In other places it was quite narrow and with rocks.
