Back to Laos. After the Lahu and Khmu minority, I visited an Akha village. This place is dryer and further away from water sources, since it is located in the highlands. It has great views to the surrounding forest, but it is less pleasant to walk around because it's very steep.
I took this photo while wandering around the village. During the day kids can be seen playing around. There's a school but I was there on a weekend. The older children help in the fields at the weekend and the smaller ones take care of the even smaller - you can see a girl running with a baby on her back. Women go out very early in the morning, before the sunrise, to work in the rice fields. Some men go out as well, to hunt, but the majority stay in the village taking care of domestic chores. Pigs, chickens and dogs aren't in contained areas and can be seen everywhere.
There's no electricity and the closest road is one day walking distance.
More information about the Akha minority can be seen here and here (Wikipedia).

the ground has been captured extremely vividly and a lot of class making the different tones an textures tell a story. Extremely great composition indeed with a superlative pov

Hi Ricardo. Nice documentary picture. This is photography too: the truth cannot be hidden. Some people still live daily without things we find so normal.
wolf38 (31296) 2008-02-05 4:39
Hello Ricardo. Photo worth seeing and an instructive. Really protruding. Ideal a picture for TE. Best regards, Wolfgang.
Tue (36196) 2008-02-05 4:48
Excellent composition, the open field is well surrounded by the houses, built against the hill, on the left hand side. There is a lot to see in the foreground with those animals and all the playing children. The colours are pleasant. Thanks for sharing!
jasmis (58010) 2008-02-05 5:04
Pure exotic. Forgotten place. Superb composition nad colours.

Hi Ricardo an excellent picture today, with a great capture of this village and the the inhabitants, children, but also pigs, cocks and dogs. xcellent POV and high quality too.
holmertz (52008) 2008-02-05 5:17
What a lot of action and information you have squeezed into one picture. Not just daily life, but also architecture and nature. Good composition and fine colours.
flory (4848) 2008-02-05 5:20

great scene of this remote place, everybody lives in perfect harmony, children ,animals, a very TE photo...
ribeiroantonio (22637) 2008-02-05 6:03

nice documentary shot. so many subjects in one frame. great pov
Cricri (118785) 2008-02-05 7:56
Dpbours (222) 2008-02-05 8:07
Nice point of view with the kids, all those animals and the path that has been eroded due to all the rainwater passing by. But reading your note, I understand there's not that much rainwater passing by here...
Your description of rural village life is very true. I've read it an I do recognize it from what I have seen in Indonesia while working there. But the Laos countryside is surely more backward with respect to access to modern life than the rural villages you will find in Indonesia. Nice capture.
gilou530 (34) 2008-02-05 9:04
delic (6735) 2008-02-05 9:17
Impressive reportage from this village, Ricardo. Not the usual touristic stuff for sure. Do you have any shots where you were closer to the kids? Great note, too. Regards,
bantonbuju (51815) 2008-02-05 9:38
life...it's all about life, how it looks, how it feels, how it smells....
no sh@# about the surrounding mountains making great landscapes, no posing for two dollars...plain life...
leo61 (0) 2008-02-05 9:41
A wonderful daylifeshot from this village.I like the view upwards, thanks to your well choosen low POV.The arrangement of kids and animals looks as great as the old wooden huts at this hill.
emka (96439) 2008-02-05 10:45
the photo is fantastic! It is like Brueghel painting set in exotic place. There is so much life here, children, pigs with piglets, dogs and hens. Interesting houses too. I love such places but of course you must have enough time to get there. But certainly it is worth every effort. I was in Akka village in Thailand, also interesting, but closer to civilization. Thanks for sharing.
Waylim (25502) 2008-02-05 11:00
Good to see you taking us back to Laos. What more can I say after all the comments you already got. Everyone seems to beat me to it. Anyway, here is my version. You take me back home with this shot. Looking at this photo you get general overall feeling of what’s to expect as you continue down the dusty road. Children playing their games, Live stocks running freely sniffing the ground for food. You’ve have to be careful not to step on a dog just around the corner. Excellent depiction of daily life in a remote Akha village. Good composition, clarity, natural color, good contrast for somewhat an overcast and cloudy day.
vincz (19113) 2008-02-05 13:11
It is amazing how there seems to be no vegetation around. Maybe the lack of water. Great to see the activity in this village with only children and animals around. An excellent documentary shot with great informative note.
paura (47186) 2008-02-05 13:39
Floydian (30970) 2008-02-05 14:56
Very interesting daily life photo Ricardo. Really good presented in how these people live and in what kind of circumstances. I love the kids and animals all around the place, without them it wouldn't work at all.
Very good shot...
Vato_Law (12720) 2008-02-05 15:20
japiey (10163) 2008-02-05 20:46
This is life in its real eye....
The world laughs at many corners, rejoice and party , have their fun shared to the many unwanted, think that they are the amazing humans... and look here, people living in the dark shores of life... An image that should be seen and thought by humane hearts.
Excellent documentation, well filmed, and presented.
keribar (43841) 2008-02-05 21:54
I am impressed by the color of the ground, and the absence of any green plants on it.
A splendid picture showing the village, good idea to take such a wide panorama.
A tender caress to your cats and hugs for you - Izzet
UnTrained (0) 2008-02-05 22:41
looks in the first moment very poor, but this is sometimes not true if they have what they need. Funny scene with the view having the houses along the slope and the coloured spots of children and animals everywhere. Good texture of the ground.

So different from Paris !!?
Another world, another way of living... Another energy too...
I do like that.

a very good photo Ricardo,
the details are super, there is depth in the shot, well taken photo from a good quality, very good photojob, have a nice day.
Henryk_Bilor (20799) 2008-02-06 7:46
This is not a nice place. But in your capture it looks quite comfortable. Both for those people living there and for tourist seeking for relax. Interesting primitive architecture.
danos (97453) 2008-02-06 7:46
very nice daily snapshot of the Akha minority. As i see the perspective and the POV are great and the children live and grow up there with carelessness and in the nature. The conditions of life are difficult and natives live a lot of years behind on our own culture. The colours and the light are superb.Very informative your note.Next March i'll visit Laos and Cambodia for a 10 day trip.Did you travelled alone in Laos or with group?
sacavem (18620) 2008-02-06 8:56
Grande composição da vida real e diária nessa zona do planeta esquecida... Boa nota descritiva.
Porque a miséria e desgraça faz boas fotos?????????
Didi (60588) 2008-02-06 10:30
Interesting scene but very hard life condition of theese peoples.
What happen if the rain fall there ?
Morac (27723) 2008-02-06 11:39
Good evening Ricardo,
The photograph is beautiful by its colors and its composition but especially the truth which it transmits
bostankorkulugu (42426) 2008-02-06 16:57
i like the amphitheatre-like setting here... everything's there... the kids, the animals, the houses... the daily life in a poor village... this is a beautiful picture ric... their poverty hurts though...
gneufeld (15890) 2008-02-06 17:20
I love this daily life image - shanty type homes, animals, chickens, people, all in a certain harmony for the culture. Very well seen and TFS. Gerald
belido (19934) 2008-02-07 5:37
As crianças completam a cena. Parabéns!
siolaw (38292) 2008-02-07 6:41
I like this view of the remote village... it shows us exactly how this people live, animals everywhere, wooden stilted houses. Even if the weather was not so helpful, you got nice colors and contrasts. Good sharpening too.
That is a pure daily life scene... good docu shot Ricardo!
JCG (35129) 2008-02-07 13:30
I have the impression that the strong rains which it must have in this area, dug the ground. An interesting photograph and full with life on the daily life of these remote villages. This white sky is not awkward and emphasizes well contours of these habitations and creates an appreciable relief. Thank you for the note and instructive Internet link.
With all my friendships and a very good evening,
stego (24132) 2008-02-07 16:39
banyanman (7789) 2008-02-07 23:44
What a fabulous daily life shot this is, Ricardo. It is also illustrative of just how far off the beaten track that you get on your treks. Excellent detail. All those kids, pigs, dogs and chickens running around really makes this shot. This is the type of photo that I enjoy seeing on TE. One small suggestion: I would have tried cropping the top through the middle of the roof of the hut in the top right. I don't think that would have adversely impacted the composition or balance, but would have reduced the amount of blown-out sky in frame. Cheers . . . David
ChrisJ (113203) 2008-02-08 1:56
Missed this one. A marvellous daily life shot with lots of interesting details to look at. Good sharpness, lighting & contrast with excellent color. Obrigado & parabens!

This is an effective image of the village, telling the story well!
Outdoor life this time of day is children, chicken and pigs, the scenery is well framed from a good point of view...
A well balanced composition with fine details!
jmcl (14535) 2008-02-10 8:10
What a wonderful composition of village life .. I love the distance .. the way the buildings frame the scene .. the sense of cluttered, dirty, tranquility .. wonderful sense of place and time.
Angshu (56750) 2008-02-10 20:15
Wonderful picture! Looks like a etching on wood given the brown tones throughout the picture. This is daily life in the truest sense..a scene which I would see even in my country...possibly different types of houses, different faces, but similar at the heart. Crowded with characters, crowded with action, but that's how it should be...a great shot perhaps the best in your Lao series so far IMHO.
Why don’t you make a travelogue of the Lao pictures?
manatee (4668) 2008-02-27 15:38

Sorry I'm late but I have been quite busy in the last few days. Fortunately today, Sunday, there is a short break in my work.
Good daily life shot with a superb composition, the children playing and helping each others without the presence of their parents, it's a hard life in deed. Very well captured with so many details. Good POV, colors and sharpness.
noborders (1010) 2008-03-10 7:47
The setting is extraordinary - we could see very very similar villages in north Thailand end of the 70s, probably not any more but Laos is not Thailand !
I love this large view, it gives so many informations... Great colours and fantastic scene !
Looking forward to seeing more photos in your galery,
coco (30439) 2008-03-20 2:42
Very well done.
Last weeks I have been a bit "out" because I've travelled for different places and that's the reason why I hadn't seen this one. And I like this one.
Well done and thanks for sharing.
jmdias (63958) 2008-07-11 17:21

a very interesting daily life scene, with an extraordinary subject and good note.
