Photographer’s Note

Nothing in this picture proves my statement that it is a very cold day when I bike through this girl's village. Although it is. There is a cold chill in the air and the sky opens up to pour its heavy rains on us at regular times. Dressed in a few layers of clothes, soaked to the bone and biking my heart out to get warm, I praise myself lucky.

The life conditions in this village are of the poorest kind. Some children are dressed in torn little trousers only and others wear an out of size t-shirt. As if the available clothes have to be divided and shared by as many children as possible. I don't see a single child wearing any sort of footwear as I walk through the earth beaten paths, my sneakers embarrassingly comfortable on my feet.

The village doesn't have a school and the difficultly accessible track to here just simply stops there and then, as if there is nothing beyond.

The girls sucks the plastic bag, holds and plays with it as if it were here most precious toy. Probably it also is.

When I am lying in bed that night, my windows without glass cruelly invite the cold air and make me shiver in bed. A big storm breaks out in the night and the thunder and lightening have no mercy. Rain starts pouring down. I think about the girl in the village and sadness hangs over me like the dark clouds that are covering the sky.

Dag Sabine,
Zie hier, een bewijs dat het TE draait om actief bezig zijn in het uitdelen van punten (jaja, ik doe er zelf ook aan mee) om die vervolgens ook weer retour te krijgen. Kwalitiet leveren zonder actief bezig te zijn brengt succes in topklasse foto's zonder waardering...leuk he ;-)
Het is hier de pose van het kind, zijn donkerblauw en rode kleding wat ozo mooi afsteekt tegen die bruine tinten rondom haar. Iets uit het centrum, mooie laag standpunt, je hebt er aandacht aan besteed en dat is te zien.
Laos lijkt me een facinerend land, ik moet nog weer eens terug naar Azie om ook dit soort foto's te maken....

Hoi Sabine,

Ja, mooi in focus en off-center compo. En een goede note as well die mooi bij de foto past.
Ik weet het niet. Toch doet deze foto het niet voor mij. Ik bedoel; Ik heb zo vaak de kans gehad tijdens mijn werk om kinderen op een bepaalde manier op de plaat te zetten, maar dat trok me nooit. Zielige kinderen, zieke kinderen, arme kinderen, onwetende kinderen, etc... Ik zet ze er graag krachtig op, ook al is de realiteit soms anders. Daarbij vraag ik me zelf altijd af hoe ik het zou vinden om op m'n 18e uit te vinden dat ik ergens in m'n naakte kont op het internet heb gestaan als een zielig kind. Ja, ik besef dat de realiteit is dat dit kind en haar vriendjes geen toegang hebben tot internet later... Maar toch.
Het is wel mooi, het licht valt ook goed. Maar het is me allemaal net ietsje te kwetsbaar, of misschien moet ik zeggen dat het me té makkelijk is. Ik bedoel, de kracht zoeken in zo'n kind kost meer moeite dan een mooie plaat te maken van een kind in d'r blote kont in een dergelijke setting. Tja, lastig. Ik weet het niet. ;-)

the low pOV is excellent Sabine, I can feel your engagement with the young girl. Hard to believe that this image has been up for 6 months and only two persons have been brave enough to comment and 832 have looked. Makes me wonder what peopel want. But as i always say it is not about points, one nice comment from someone who sees what you saw at the time of capture makes it worthwhile, and when the comment comes from Henk even more so.

J'ai tombé par hasard sur cette photo et comme dit Elaine, je suis surpris moi aussi que tu n'aies pas eu plus de commentaires pour cette magnifique photo de la petite fille. Une image en toute innocence que j'ai vue plusieurs fois mais je n'avais pas toujours ma caméra. Excellente exposition avec le fond flou qui fait ressortir le sujet et superbes couleurs.

Ciao Sabine,
your shooting pose from a low Pov is winning here as well for the blurred background you worked out.
Then again your notes that lead us in the place with you (and that I was missing a lot this last year).
All this to wish you a successfull new year with lot of light on the right places...

Hello Sabine,
here you expose the absolute vulnerability of this small child. t is a difficult photo to look at and an even more difficult one to critique. But I commend your need to bear witness to the way this world can be cruel. What a terrible thing that in a world filled with wealth and so many resources that there are people with nothing.
