Photographer’s Note

This was taken about 15 - 20 kilometres east of the lake side town of Balykchy, which is on the extreme western edge of Lake Issyk-kul. The view is looking north across the corner of the lake (which can just be seen as a thin blue line below the snow cover) and which stretches about 150 km east from here. The mountain range is a low lying range, at this point, on the western edge of the Tian Shan. Kazakhstan, and the large city of Almaty is on the other side of the mountain.

This was taken in mid winter but the lake never freezes as it is very deep.

The dark blue patch in the foreground is a wet piece of ground in the shade of a high row of trees, behind me, lining the road I was travelling on.
