Photographer’s Note
Shanirak is the half spherical top of the yurt, which has a zenith hole – tundik. It serves as a window. The smoke from the open fire goes out through it. During the bad weather it is closed by a felt.
The yurt is one of the most ancient types of transportable dwellings adopted to the nomadic life style. It was widespread among the nomadic and semi nomadic tribes of Eurasian steppes and has preserved its ancient shape until now.

When I first saw this I couldn't figure out what I was looking at. I could see the hole, but thought it was a light fixture with a mobile hanging under it. You're notes set that straight. An intersting photo and good note. TFS
