The Karasuyama Yamaage Festival is famous for its outdoor performances of traditional Japanese plays. The stages are portable and a long section of the street is used to put up the backdrops, giving the effect of tree-covered mountains in the distance. There are two main actors who have many onstage costume changes (with help from assistants), a troupe of musicians and lots of "backstage" people rearranging the scenery .
This photo is of the actres before the performance. She's actually sitting in a frog on wheels, which is trundled down a little slope at the beginning of the play. (Well, I didn't understand it either.)
Tech: scanned from a print, cropped, USM. Film was Fuji SP 100. |
