Photographer’s Note

1983 Kyoto, Japan. Despite the downpour, the two little schoolgirls posed obligingly when I smiled and pointed to my camera. I shot the photo using a semi-automatic Nikon F, loaded with Kodachrome-25 slide film. With the extemely slow film (ISO-25), and no fill-flash available, the girls' faces appeared hopelessly dark in the original slide. But after scanning the slide, I was able to lighten their faces selectively with Photo Shop, revealing their impish, and endearing smiles. It did not make sense to saturate the photo any further, because this was a gloomy overcast day.

Twenty-three years have passed since I shot the photograph; I wonder what became of them? One discerning TE-subscriber speculates perhaps they are school teachers, another suggests perhaps they are posting photos on TE. What a wonderful site this is!

This was the first shot of yours I saw, and what drew me to look at the rest of your photos. Who can resist smiles in the rain? I like how you got the shot (smiling and pointing at the camera). I will keep that in mind next trip I take!

Great smiles! I am amazed at the clarity of this shot for such slow film and such a gloomy day. There are some artifacts of post processing on the girl in red's face but after reading your note, it explains everything. Good work!

wouldn't it be fun if they would be posting on TE ... or maybe one of these days will start ... and while surfing around find their own picture here ... yes, i think this is a wonderful site!
