Sea Eagle Conversation Photo

Photographer’s Note

These three sea eagles lined up on a peice of ice floe remind me to three old guys standing watching a scene with the furthest from the camera making some comment about the scene before them.

They were taken at 6:37AM on the ice floe just off the shore of Rausu in Hokkaido.

Great composition. I like the fact that you did not crop closer, showing the eagles in their environment. The yellow beaks and feet against the black and white of the snow is just great. Well done!

Wonderful. Perfect depth of field. Good sharpness and clarity. Perhaps crop the top 1/4 inch to omit the black part. Good subjects chosen. Well done.

This is excellent Martin. Usually, I am impressed enough when someone gets a nice clear shot of a wild bird, but to be able to compose as you have is really something. Your exposure seems excellent as well, as the white is true white and there are nice details left in the birds. Are these the same sea eagles I have seen in Thailand and elsewhere throughout SE Asia? I was surprised to see them resting on an ice flow, I always associated them with the tropics.

What a great bird with interesting color combination of black, white and orange. Great composition. Simple colors of the background highlight the eagles nicely.

The only thing missing for this trio of old guys chatting is a big cigar on the corner of their beak. Great shot, I didn't know about sea eagles and I thought they were solitary birds not ones to keep in gangs, unless it's mother and children. Perfect composition here with the three birds aligned in a diagonal and placed on the left third of the photo. Good capture of the snow, colors are natural.

Hi Martin. What a dramatic shot. The sea eagles are beautiful, and sitting together on the ice gives this shot a very unique and wonderful feel. What good fortune to see such a sight! Excellent!

Almost a funny scene, I agree with you, they look like 3 old guys chatting and make me smile :-)

What a great capture and why does the Muppet show float up in my mind!! Great DOF and exposure and the line up composition is a marvel. A bit funny too, why sit on a drifting little ice flake when you are one of the top aeronautics of the world?

Colours are magnificent and the neatness of the image also. And if the image was cut at the top so as to respect the rule of third parties? The position in diagonal is good, really a beautiful photo.

I am flabbergasted! What a great shot. Very nice job to make these very impressive birds look like funny cartoon animals. It must have been a very rare occassion to see three of these birds together. I'm glad that you had the opportunity to take this picture and share the result with us.

As mentionned by Darren, it's not easy to get sharp birds textures. Here, exposure is perfect in a difficult environment, great details are present, and focus is perfect. But, on top of that, you also have an image showing a very well catched group attitude, placed in the right framing. To me this is an exceptionnal moment every photographer would dream of!

Sharp colours in a well composed picture. I wonder what they're all observing :D The contrasts of their beaks and bodies against the icy sea is amazing. Tfs, an outstanding shot :)
