The Power of Red Photo

Photographer’s Note

This is again the entrance gate to the Kyomizu-dera temple complex I presented some time ago in a daytime version. Normally this complex is open from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM but during the sakura period a night opening takes place starting a 6:30 PM.

This is what I discovered on my first evening in Kyoto, but I did not enter because the length of the queue to get in was demotivating and it was raining quite much. This explains why this photo has been taken without tripod and with the welcome assistance of my wife kindly holding the umbrella.

Mais, elle est où la blue hour?? Non, mais finalement, ca le fait bien, ca contraste super bien ce rouge et ce noir..
J'aime bien aussi l'écho du vêtement rouge.

C'est magnifique comme ce bâtiment ressort.
Bien cadré, c'est net malgré la durée de pause.
C'est quand même partique un 18-200 en voyage et les résultats ont l'air d'être très bon.

Maybe 15 min to late to catch the last light of the day in the sky?
Now it's a bit to dark for me, but the red of the building is in full contrast to the rest of the surrounding, which is perfect.
Looking longer at it......man i like that red a lot...very nice..!!!

Salut JY,

Red on black - great contrast! (and a title of a famous song of a Russian rock band...;) The woman in red (oh, man, this is a title of another song...;) or is it a man here?.. anyway, the figure in red adds a lot to your palette here, and I like the light on the trees very much. This is a perfect example that one doesn't always need a blue hour to make beautiful night shots!

Manque plus que le lune dans le coin en haut a gauche et c'était exceptionnel !!! m'enfin si tu dis qu'il pleuvait, tu pouvais toujours attendre ;o))
L'image est vraimet top (surtout prise sans trepied) et d'ailleur un grand merci a Madame terror d'avoir tenu le parapluie ;o))
L'entrée du temple est absolument superbe, et on retrouve un peu partout cette couleur qui lui va si bien.

apres la Blue Hour, tu lances la Black hour ?
Une bonne compo, mais je regrette juste une expo un peu plus longue pour deboucher un peu les parties sombres ... m'enfin, comme cela on a juste un gros champignon hall(ucin)ogene ...
Bien vu le parallele monument et petit gars rouges ... je te pensais au Japon, pas en Chine !

C'est plutot reussi tu sais, Jean-Yves, oui cette pagode rouge vif qui surgit du nouir de la nuit. Et quel pique! J'aime aussi la femme (c'est une femme?) vetue de rouge au bas de l'escalier, comme echo...

De l'utilité du parapluie et d'une épouse dévouée, Jean-Yves !
Ce rouge dans la nuit c'est beau comme un camion de pompier le soir de Noël (ce n'est pas péjoratif mais admiratif !)
Le rouge de la chemise du monsieur est en harmonie avec celui de l'édifice. Beau travail !

The POV, the special lighting, and the ambience reach out to the viewer in this shot Your caption is apropos, as the reddish dominance is alluring and I like how the secondary red objects complement the main structure. The tree on the left nicely balances the frame. Well captured.

Superbe image. Il s'agit ici d'une photo de nuit très bien réalisée. La composition est soignée et la netteté est excellente. Je suis impressioné par le fait que tu aies pris cette photo sans tripod ! Tu as su profiter de ton 350D et de son niveau de bruit ridicule à 800 ISO. J'aime beaucoup l'arbre aux feuilles bordeaux qui donne un écho à la toiture rouge ! Sans parler de la personne au pull rouge !!

Voici une remarquable mise en valeur de ce bâtiment. L'éclairage est bien utilisé et l'absence de tripod ne se fait pas sentir. Le rouge claquant dans le noir rend un effet extra.

Bonjour Jean Yves,
Une composition avec une lumière qui donne une touche d'intimité à cette image. Le temple illuminé dans cette lumière rouge tellement chaude et lisse est parfaitement cadré entouré des zones foncées et mystérieuses.
Bonne explication, la queue et la pluie font renoncer de visiter des lieux tellement jolis, mais au moins tu l'as immortalisé dans cette bonne photo.

Very powerful and beautifully lit and exposed shot, Jean-Yves. The red stands out so well, illuminated against the inky sky. I like the diagonal formed by the steps too, and particularly the way the bright red of the gate is echoed in the clothing of the figure on the steps.

That's an impressive image! Reminds me of Caravaggio & his style of dark shadowery background with striking bright foreground, which works extremely well in your pic. The details of the architecture also great, and good sharpness too. Lovely work! TFS.

Joli temple bien éclairé et bien exposé. Sympa aussi l'arbre fleuri aussi éclairé. Cela donne un équilibre avec l'homme en rouge qui montent les escaliers bien que j'aurais préféré qu'il soit dans une position plus dynamique.

Un nouveau week-end de folie m'attend (mais ça sera moins marrant qu'en Corse) et je profite de quelques heures de calme avant la tempête pour faire un petit tour sur TE!
Tu aurais presque pu appeler celle-ci "Le rouge et le noir" même si un autre a déjà eu cette idée avant toi. Ca change de la blue hour à laquelle tu nous a habitués dans tes photos nocturnes, mais ce rouge éclairé contre le ciel noir, ça le fait bien aussi. Et puis j'aime ces petites touches de rouges que l'on retrouve un peu partout: la deuxième porte au fond, la série de petits lampions sur la droite et bien sûr les personnage éclairé qui monte les marches.

Awesome red here Jean Yves...excellent perspective & that person in red especially adds to the visual impact. I also like how the rear end trees are green and ythose in the front has that reddish tinge. Wonderful!

J'espère que les japonais ne s'occidentaliseront (?!) jamais assez pour nous faire trop d'édifices semblables aux nôtres et garderont l'idée de nous créer des beautés architecturales aux milles détails si finement ciselés! Ouf!
Et quelle couleur! Un bâtiment qui ne peut passer inaperçu. Mais encore faut-il nous cadrer ça de la bonne façon et attendre la nuit profonde pour avoir un fond noir qui viendra mettre en valeur ce chef-d'oeuvre du génie japonais.
Et les petits détals complètent le tout : la petite rangée de lanternes montante, le second édifice qui est comme un rappel, mais en plus petit et en tons adoucis (il ne fait pas compétition) et cet homme (j'y tiens! lols) au chandail rouge s'apprêtant à gravir les escaliers.
C'est bien beau ça, M. Terror the Red!

I have no problem begrudgingly giving even more points on TE.

Great composition, wonderful colour, well defined image, well framed, nice angle and great point of view.

The gate really stands out in the image. So often the subject of the image is overshadowed by something else in the photo, but here there is no arguments as to what is the dominant object.

You say this is a temple complex? How many temples are there inside it?
