This picture was taken on the grounds of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo on January 2nd 2001. It belongs to the Emperor of Japan.
These grounds are open to the public on the Emperor's birthday, December 23th and on January 2nd, the day after new years. The rest of the year, these grounds are off limits.
The Imperial Palace is called The Kōkyo and is not far from Tokyo Station. It is in the centre of Tokyo. The grounds are huge and is protected to the outside by wide canals.
You can see the Emperor and his family behind the glass. I must say I actually can't remember that much of it. I can't remember if he spoke or not. He appeared a few times that day for a brief period. We didn't have to wait that long before he appeared but it was, as expected, very crowded. I do remember that the security check before entering the grounds was extremely tight. It was very crowded but well organized and the entire group was guided thru the gardens to the exit on the north east. The gardens were beautiful.
The entire event was one of the highlights of my trip. I still have the little flag. (:

Hi Gilbert, :)
Good note. Nice story.
If I look close I can see the Emperor and his family on the balcony. Nice capture... it is rare to see the Imperial Family out like this. I don't think there are many photos of them on TE... maybe 2 (including this one!).
I like the composition of the crowd and their flags, the building and its green roof, and then the clear blue skies of Tokyo.
That is how I remember Tokyo... clear blue skies. :)
I would say you could crop out some of the sky, but it would unbalance the image. So leave it in. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. ;)
Thanks for sharing.

This work symbolizes the present-day Imperial Palace.
Many of buildings are formed in the sharp straight line.
And such a beautiful sky like this is difficult except this day.
Wonderful composition and color!

Very good photo! You captured the crowd well, with good colours and sharpness.
