Photographer’s Note
Going to Hiroshima and visiting the Peace Memorial Museum and the adjacent park certainly ranks high among the most poignant moments of my trip to Japan. One of the structures that can be seen along the Motoyasu-gawa River is the so-called A-bomb Dome, Hiroshima's former Industrial Promotion Hall which was one of the very few structures that remained standing within a 3 km radius of where the atomic bomb was dropped on August 6, 1945.
I could not bring myself to taking a crisp but meaningless tourist shot of the A-bomb Dome - instead I was looking for an artistic or more symbolic depiction and the option I preferred was to show the dome at a very shallow DOF, appearing behind a freshly blossoming cherry tree that could be seen as representing renewal of life, even hope to a certain extent.
I'm at Fukuoka at the time I am posting this, and will return to Europe on Tuesday. Happy Easter everybody.

A very effective statement and a great composition in its own right. Beautiful blossoms and just enough depth of field to recognise the building.

Good composition with the BG ruins of the bomb. The combination of the pink flower and the pinkish building in the BG have a strong emotional connection and is very artistic. A very sensitive capture! Too bad the weather was overcasted.
Well seen take!

hi norbert,
hiroshima must be a "bad" and sad place to visit...
excellent idea and capture with the blossoms
as a sign of hope and peace in front
of the blurred ruins of the dome.
well done!

Well that's just a masterpiece, Norbert, as I wrote to you before when I caught s sneak preview of it on your blog. This is way beyond technique, reaching down deep in the realm of art. Again not easy to find a new vantage point for the Dome, but you certainly did.
Ecellent work,
Cheers,

Bonjour Norbert,
Très belle photo avec une focale courte qui laisse deviner ce gros bâtiment en arrière-plan, le cadrage est très réussit ! Et puis les couleurs des fleurs sont très fraîches.
Amicalement,

Hi Norbert,
My heart is pained every time the A-bomb Dome is seen. However, I think that this photo expresses hope by applying the focus to favorite Japanese cherry blossoms, and blurring the background.
Fukuoka is my hometown, Did you try Hakata Ramen which Chinese noodles in soup.
Happy Easter!

Greetings Norbert. One of the best pictures of blossoms I have seen and one of the saddest contexts in which to see it.We must all hope for the never again. So sharply rendered, yet at the same time their delicate character has not been compromised. I feel I can reach out and touch the petals. You have created this feeling by contrasting the blossoms against the muted, distant dome.A clever piece in terms of the rational used and an evocative piece in terms of your emotional involvement.

beautiful in that context..i would still give it a bit more DOF i think..(would give a better idea)
in these kind of places, you did the right thing.. would be very boring otherwise.. ;)
nice composition, good title, good symbolic description of this place..
cheers.

Hallo Norbert,
Very nicely composed, the flowers of hope and the low DOF, but just enough to recoknize a symbol of the human destructive stupidity.
Happy easter (of what remain in the morning land) and have a nice return trip.

hi norbert, guess youre still in japan, anyhow have a good easter,
i envy you the blooming spring (which is not still the case here),
somehow i do not get the dof here, the building in a distance only slightly shaped looks more like an european bit of architecture than an oriental japanese archi example;
best wishes, jerzy

Hi Norbert, Quite symbolic photo today.
I am from Hiroshima originaly and my cousin's father experienced the bomb and my teacher at my elementary school experienced it as well. I had been hearing the real stories from them and they were really scary..
This is beyond the photo itself, the message conveyed here is much much more valuable to me. Thanks for sharing. Have a good easter!

Yes, I get your idea and I like it. Thanks for this new perspective that, indeed, it´s like a new reborn: After the attack they thought green wont be possible again on trees, they were as wrong as the very concept of the atomic wheapons. Visit both the museum of Hiroshima and Nagasaki should be mandatory for teenagers all around the world as part of their education. Take care.

Hi Norbert. I like that you brought some cheer in a sad place. You had good timing to be there with the right light for it to illuminate those blossoms. The bokeh is ok, not awesome but not bad either. I won't be around TE tomorrow so have a great trip back on Tuesday!

Hi Norbert, A very delicate and very emotional picture, depicting life, and the future, while there a symbol of death in the back. But the symbol of life is sharp and clean which can be interpretated in hope perhaps, while the other is blurred,
Welcome back home - and Happy Easter.

Hi Norbert,
like Richard said, it's a clever idea to present this symbolic place. Nobody will forget the desaster of the destruction using such bombs and they were not used since this time and I'm sure they will not be used in the future.
Very nice pictire of re-birth wiyh sofy colors.

Now Norbert,
what a better Easter post than this!
Soft, emotional, light - a really well chosen technique for presenting us with the Peace Memorial Museum and reminding us of all atrocities done by great power of the World Police (that is still doing it nowadays, unfortunately!)

Hi Norbert,
Great idea to make a shot like this. I love the detailed and close up look of the cherry blossoms with the blurred building in the background. Indeed some sort of a renewal of life and maybe seen as a sign of hope. Well capture! Great composition with amazing sharpness and beautiful colours!

Is there something more beautiful than cherry blossoms in Japan? Maybe there is, but these blossoms alone would be worth flying all the way I think. Very good idea to have the dome "only" as a backrgound with the beautifull blossoms in the front. The colours are really nice and soft and fit the motive really well.

Hi Norbert,
what a beautiful and symbolic composition !!!
:-)
I find really nice the idea to give an other dimension to this A-Bomb Dome ! That's meaningful and I like the feeling of peace, hope that you give to this picture.
Otherwise, I find that the blossom is well centred and very neat.
The colors get on well too.
That's a good contrast between the sadness (grey, past, death, war) of the A-Bomb Dom and the colors of the blossom (pink, present, life, peace, hope).
Thank you for this marvellous picture.
Have a nice evening, best regards.

Hi Norbert, A powerful way of putting the past into the future. Growth overcomes sad times. I met an Ameru=ican recently who pointed out far more were killed by fires from blanket bombing, and this was just a tipping point. Man's need to kill each other is beyond comprehension. TFS. Murray.

Hi my friend.
Let me begin in this way.
Some people won't know you've gone. You say us goodbye without a last present or picture, but I understand it would be silly: post another picture and the reason why you leave us is not compatible.
Anyway, from my first days here in TE, when I discovered your gallery I discovered a wonderful view of the world.
It's a pity, but somehow we haven't lost your pictures: is TE who has lost them.
I mean, I think I've learnt a lot from people like you. And I think you're one of the best members of this site.
Really we will miss you.
Carlos.
(maybe someone could remove this critique because I don't critique the photo: this is another good, very good photo, as all your pictures in your old gallery... and also I like the meaning, a new meaning, of this picture)

Hi, Norbert.
A great shot!!!
I like the cherry blossoms' light pink colour.
But it is quite difficult to take a good photo of the blossoms because the pink is too slight, isn't it?
Spring is my favourite(^_^)v
