Photographer’s Note

Kinkaku, the Golden Pavilion, is located on the grounds of the temple Rokuon-ji (also called Kinkaku-ji) in Kyoto. In the 13th century it was a shogun's villa. In 1950 a young monk burned the temple to the ground, hoping to die in the flames, which didn't happen. Each floor is in a different architectural style. The top two floors are covered with gold leaf (like foil made from gold), last replaced about 20 years ago. The Pavilion is a World Heritage site.
