This is a Japanese or Tanchou Crane in Kushiro, Hokkaido. Unfortunately this was is only semi-wild, taken in a reserve.
The red patch on the crane's head is not feathers, but skin, I guess simliar to a chicken's cockscomb.
I was actually hoping to photograph some Tanchouzuru purely in the wild on my trip, but it wasn't to be. Hopefully next spring I'll be able to capture some tanchouzuru in the wild.

Very interesting picture of a rare bird. Good notes, too. The bird is sharp enough, but the background is too sharp, making it hard to see the crane. This subject is difficult to expose because of its white feathers. Photographing in less harsh light, such as late afternoon, might bring out the texture in the feathers. As it is, the back is burned out. A good try, though.
