I took this one last December on a trip we made to Kusatsu Onsen, a famous natural springs town in Japan.
Hot water runs everywhere, stree ice is melted away using the natural hot water (very convenient!).
In center of town is the actual source of water, which produces the heavy steam shown here surrounding this traditional lamp.
The hotel we stayed had outside, open bath (roten buro), which is one of the most wonderful experience I had so far in Japan!
Tech note : sepia color change.

A very powerful photograph you got here. Nothing to comment regarding your use of the elements of nature, all works very well. My only suggestion would be to try to frame this shot in such way that your main subject becomes a bit less centralized. Other than that, my credits Jerome! Well done!

Very nice picture... This is the idea I have of a typical Japanese scene...

Amazing to see all that steam and still there is some snow on top of the lamp. Very nicely done. Might have taken another angle to have the lamp not as centered as it is.

Cette ambiance brumeuse embellit cette image.
L'éclairage est très bien travaillé.
Je me suis permis de faire un petit recadrage en WS.
Merci de donner votre avis.
This misty environment embellishes this image. Lighting is very well worked. I allowed myself to make a small realignment in WS.
Thank's to deliver your opinion.

A agree with most of the critics: looks very japanese to me. I never been in japan though. :-)

What an atmospheric shot, brilliantly captured, the mist gives it a surreal unearthly look about it, good choice for the sepia effect.

Nice atmospheric shot. Makes me long for winter to come so I can visit the rotenburo again. I'd be interested to see what this would look like if lamp was a little more in the lower left quarter to show a few more tree tops poking out of the steam.
mdchachi (1617) 2003-08-12 11:42
That's exactly what I was going to suggest -- putting the lantern towards the lower left with the trees at the top right. Even the current shot, you could crop vertically with the lantern on the left & trees on the right. I think that would look even better.

the fog , the color , the point of view , the nature .. all perfect. nice shoot

very beautiful picture. The sepia colour works well here.
I agree that an "off-center" picture would of been nicer.

What a great picture, stunning mist of hotness from the onsen. I hope you werent too close to it. I love the snow iswell on the lamp

I love the sepia tone of the picture. It makes it so dramatic. Especially with the mist.

A photo that represents the beauty and mainly the mystery of this, far-east corner of our planet. The sepia change is very tasteful. Great work!

Good composition assisted well by a good message about it all. Most interesting. The steam adds a lot to the overall effect.

I like this shot. In my opinion, it recalls the ancient ages. Sepia is a good choice here,it increases the whole impression. Good note, I was wondering if "the mist" here is a cloud, unusual fog or something else. Well done!

Very beautifull work

A phot with a mystic and mistery atmosphere. Perfect.
blueaquan (227) 2009-07-24 10:45
You really live in a Beautiful and geographically dangerous region. Hot water springs caused due to the presence of Volcanic materials.
The shot of Macaques in hot water springs in Japan is very popular, thanks to Discovery Channel :)
About the picture : Very well taken and the Sepia adds a Mystical touch to it. Would have preferred the Lamp in a different angle. Do they light it at all...? :)
