Photographer’s Note
Hokkaido's history in connection with the outside world is fairly recent. This photo was taken inside the former Otaru Branch of the Nihon Yusen Company from 1906. For Hokkaido, that's old.
Inside made use of the latest technologies from Japan and what was not available was imported. A majority of items came from America, like the light bulbs. In the background you can see the other lamps giving off their light.
While it was rather warm and bright inside, I tried to give the feeling of the dark and cold it often gets outside. While it does get cold, there does not seem to be much wind, which makes it fine if you keep moving while outdoors.
