Photographer’s Note
The bay of matsushima photographed in the early morning from a peninsula in front of the Taikanso hotel.
Over 200 small islands covered by red pine trees are spread out in that bay, making it a unique landscape. The region is renowned for its beautiful scenery. Oyster farming and tourism provide an income source for the people living here.
A ride with a dragon boat through the clad island jungle is one of the touristic highlights to be experienced. A natural botanical garden with many tree species and ancient temples with petrified trees form other attractions.
When visiting this place the famous Haiku poet Basho
got rid of words in his astonishment and admiration and composed a Haiku famous for its simplicity:
"Matsushima ah! A-ah, Matsushima, ah! Matsushima, ah!"
