Photographer’s Note

Detail of a rope hanging ceremoniously around a large stone Torii gate, at a Shinto Shrine (Jinja) in Toshima. Toshima is a small village that is a part of Akita city, the capital of Akita prefecture.

The rope had three such straw "brushes" hanging from it, as it spanned the width of the Torii gate.

It was a lovely sunny day, and quite mild as Akita's winter was approaching. I've been to this Shinto Shrine on a number of occasions; this time was part of a class field trip, to learn about local Japanese culture.

The picture is very beautiful, Ah Ah Ah. This image is sharp and its colours seem very natural. But put a frame.

This works well for me, it's easy to lose the details like this with a subject like a Torii gate. I initially thought I wanted to see more sky at the top of the rope, but then that would leave less space for the tassel, and that's the main subject.
