Photographer’s Note
Aomori's Nebuta Festival is one of Japan's biggest and most famous festivals. Enormous statues are made from paper applied onto a wireframe body, producing incredibly complex forms such as these. The effect is amazing to see firsthand. Seen from either angle, the giant figures appear to be two-dimensional drawings, but come alive during the festivals parade through the streets of Aomori. The floats spin and shake, showing every angle of them to the crowds, and animating the figures into life.
Here a brave warrior and a demon sqaure off, with a dragon included for extra excitement. I'm sorry that a static photograph does not do the spectacle and beauty of Nebuta justice.
