Pounding the mochi has been a traditional activity for Japanese for generations, which is thought to bring good luck. Mochi is made from a glutinous slightly sweet rice, known as mochi rice.

The traditional method for making mochi is:

1. Steam large batches of mochi-rice.
2. Put the rice in a stone or wooden basin, like a huge mortar.
3. Pound the rice over and over using big a wooden hammer.

After a few minutes of beating, you have a sticky ball of mochi.
