Photographer’s Note

Sakurajima is a very active volcano, near Kagoshima on the Japanese island Kyushu. Usually it is blowing out a lot of smoke all the time. At the moment I took this picture, the smoke cloud was a bit smaller than usual. In front is one of all those lava sculptures, that nature has made. People put coins there, to beg Sakurajima to be peaceful and nice to them and not behave like Vesuvio did to Pompeii. Probably this will not happen, because Sakurajima is blowing all the time, and is not an explosive vulcano, like Vesuvio, who can be quiet for many years, and then suddenly explode very violently.
