Photographer’s Note
Hikone city is now celebrating the 400th anniversary of its beautiful castle. I saw this "samurai" in armor who was directing a tourist on the Kyobashi street (also called the "Castle Road") near the castle. I think he was a shopowner or a city employee.
The red armor is "trademark" of the troops of Hikone. During the Tokugawa Shogunate era, the Lords of Hikone from Ii clan were close confidants of successive Shoguns. Some of them were appointed the grand councilor (Japanese:tairo/大老)of the Shogunate, and managed the affairs of state.
