Udon!
They all love udon. I also like udon.
Udon is a kind of thick wheat noodle. Especially in a western half of Japan, udon had been loved for long time.
Ise city is known as the seat of the "Grand Shrine of Ise", the highest shrine of Shintoism. Many pilgrims had visited this small city for centuries.
Under the feudal rule by the Tokugawa shogunate (1603-1867), a pilgrimage to Ise was the only opportunity to travel for the commoners. The pilgrimage to Ise was not only religious. It was a great fun and pleasure for these people. There are many kinds of local specialties for pilgrims in Ise.
Ise-udon is one of these specialties. Ise-udon noodles are thicker and softer than udon from other regions. And it should be simply eaten with soy sauce.
It is just a simple local food for today's Japanese. But if you visit Ise, you'd better to try Ise-udon once at least. It's original and authentic. |
