A quick grab shot of the Astro Boy statue at Kyoto train Station, while I waited for my train to Fuji Shin. Yes, it's a bit underexposed & grainy, but despite hundreds of uploads to TE on Kyoto, I haven't yet seen a single one of this, one of my favourite cartoon characters as a small child.
More info from Wikipedia here:
There was a revival in 2003. Some trivia:
"In the original black-and-white series, Astro's cry was "Let's go -- go -- go!!
In in the 2003 series Astro's cry was "Let's rocket!" It is also the morphing call yelled by the Space Rangers in Power Rangers in Space.
In the opening of The Simpsons episode 'Tis The Fifteenth Season all the members of the family are dressed up as Japanese superheroes. Bart is dressed up as Astroboy, wearing red boots and slicked back black hair."
Dr. Osamu Tezuka (1928=1989) was the Walt Disney of Japanese 'Anime' (animation) and designed the clock you see here in Kyoto Station. Tezuka copied the large eyes from 'Betty Boop' & 'Mickey Mouse' cartoon characters.

A very amusing picture, well taken despite what you say.

thanks for sharing some of your memories. More worth than only technical quality.

Dammit! You stole my idea! I took this exact same shot and one of Kimba the white lion when I was there:) Comparing this and mine, I actually think the grain adds a lot to the shot - mine is nicely exposed and all, but ends up looking like a tourist snap(which is what it was, really) whereas this has more interest. The darkened sort of circle surrounding the subject sort of looks like a cartoon...sort of.
Anyway, nice shot.

Hi Chris. Nice to see something a little lighter on TE. The grain adds to the comic book effect I think. Thanks for the smile.

It looks just like a frame from a cartoon from 60':))

It caught my eye from the thumbnails and it has disappointed one bit despite the grains. Excellent POV.

He he, I must admit I love this idea, excellent spotting.
I don't have much info on this character, but I do know he is very classical!
Composition works great, ok so it is underexposed and slightly grainy, but who cares. The idea in itself is enough is excellent.
I also like the ratehr low POV for this photo, I feel it gives a real impression that Astro boy really is flying.
Thank you for sharing.
