My 199th photo from Japan goes back to Himeji Castle, one of the country's iconic sights. The castle is an impressive sight at any time of year, but going in spring brings the added treat of the cherry trees outside the castle being in full bloom - and the possibility to have a scenic hanami (cherry blossom viewing) picnic as many Japanese enjoy to do.

Himeji Castle is part of UNESCO's World Heritage List, and is widely regarded as the prototypical Japanese castle, containing defensive and architectural features such as tall stone foundations, whitewash walls, gun emplacements, and stone-dropping holes. One of Himeji's most important defensive elements, and perhaps its most famous, is the confusing maze of paths leading to the main keep. The gates, baileys, and outer walls of the complex are organized so as to force an approaching force to travel in a spiral pattern around the castle on their way into the keep, facing many dead ends. This allowed the intruders to be watched and fired upon from the keep during their entire approach. However, Himeji was never attacked in this manner, and so the system remains untested.

Bonjour Norbert,

Philippe

Those cherry blossoms are so thick and bright that they appear as clouds. In fact, it's even hard to tell where the clouds end and the blossoms begin. The people at the bottom and the classic castle at the top give great accents to the scene. Well done!

Hi Norbert, what a wonderful worl with blossoms everywhere!
fantastic view, with great compoisition including many elements and many subject to watch.
thanks, ciao

Hi Norbert. That's impressive that you've got that many from Japan. I am anxiously awaiting #200! You've got a plethora of good things to take in here like the depth, people, colors, and architecture. I'm surprised it doesn't have more points than that since its deserving of a lot more. The birds are the icing on the cake for me. tfs Norbert.

Norbert, I think this image is almost a deja vu. I have the impression that you posted an image of this place before and I even adventured to do a WS on it. Anyhow, the overcast is heavy and dull giving a lot of limitations to the moment and yet the stupend blossoms are so heavy that it enlightens the scene. To the point that these people even didn't bother to have a picnic (?) although it almost looks like it will start tp rain at any given moment.

Hi, Norbert. The two points of interest are ideally placed in the composition and are linked by a diagonal line. It is intersting to see how everything is organized here: the two huge plastic cloths are really impressive, just like the splendid blossoming trees. Have you got any idea what the pole in the right corner is for? Is it advertisement? There are quite a few along the street here.

Gee, 199th already!?!
Norbert, I really like the scene you set
in front of us. Again a good compo, a trademark
of yours, lovely details and colours, but I have
to say that, even though it was obviously shot
on an overcast day, there's something about this
one that bothers me - as if the whole frame has
got a weird greyish cast over it.
Really can't determine what is it in particular;
colours and contrast seem to be alright, but on
the whole it look strange. (have to admit that I
haven't read everyone's critique to check if
anyone else have noticed the same, though).
What do you think?
Robi

Hi Norbert,
Lovely Japanese scene of spring, full of details.
Nice pov, nice calm atmosphere.
TFS,
Corinne

Hello Norbert,
Excellent frame and POV. Everywhere can be more beautiful with blossom out in Spring like this Japanese view.
Human in picnic makes power for frame.
TFS,
Have a nice day.
