Photographer's Note

There are so many experiences for which our language has no words and which we see rarely expressed in our culture. How do you begin to communicate, to really communicate and not speak in cliches? There are many things I want to say about the view at Mount Takao. I have been thinking about it a lot the past few days, since I had a dream about it. When I saw that view I felt like I was going to fall into the land before me. I felt somewhat disturbed because I had never before consciously experienced such a vast expanse of impassable disorder. But at the same time there was a certain freedom. It is rather strange living in these times, where we have brought to order (from our perspective) the entire land. But things are really not that way. Things are not ordered, and things are not sensible in the ways that we are taught to make sense of things. The more of the world we experience truly and not through the stubborn filters of our conscious mind, the more we are led to understand what is and not merely structure our lives around illusory mental concepts.

I never made it to the summit of Mount Takao. I wonder what I would have seen from there.

Edit (28th July 08) - Improvements to curves and colour adjustments. Decided to present photo as uncropped. View before and after.
