I tried out Sam's method of palming the camera and taking the picture blind to try to capture a more candid shot.

Nice shot. I like the expression on the boys face in the front, which really sets the compostion. The picture really tells a story.

This is a very nice capture of daily life in Japan, Mike. I try to do the same while I was there but could not get any. The movement of the boy adds dynamism to this shot.
What is the palming technique?

Well done, Mike. Composition is good here, and the layering of near, middle and far subjects works well--with the near subject being the most engaging. I agree that the motion adds dynamism to the shot, and it's also very instructive about daily life in Japan.
"Palming" has a low success rate, but when you get a good one, you really get a good one. I think you have done just that with this photo.

You did a very good capture of the mouvment of the boy and of a slive of life. It couldn't have been better if his 2 feet were on the ground.

Great capture, one can really appreciate the scene as the kids leave school. Composition is very nice with the happiest kid in foreground at right with the others trailing behind, spaced out nicely throughout the frame.

Great capture. Palming your camera put you on the same level as the children and kept them from making the viewer a part of the photo, both make this special. I like the line from front to back, with everyone in motion and the little boy with a big heavy bag. Looks great.

Hi Mike, Thankyou for your comments. I was really surprised to see your photos. I thought you liked/took design-oriented photos. I like this photo. The angle, the movement and the expressions. It is different from many TE children photos, because these children are very priviledged. Maiko
