Photographer's Note

This is an area along the Ōshū Kaidō and the Nikko Kaidō located on foot at the place for about 15 minutes from the Asakusa center. This photograph is a shopping mall in this area. Although it was the time near daytime, the shutter of many stores was still closed. This whole place was the base which does not offer a meal from the Edo period. There are many a cheap lodging house in this area at the present. It is the area in which day laborers had gathered once. However, since the charge is cheap and the tourist can easily go the center of Tokyo by using Hibiya Metro Line from the time of the FIFA World Cup Japan-South Korea convention in 2002. So, the town itself changed so that the case where an incoming tourist uses the accommodations of the Nihonzutsumi(San-ya) area might be seen. From the first, it was a posting station of the beginning of the direction of Edo in the Nikko Highway. The cheap lodging house town was formed in the highway entrance of the end of the Tokyo city area by the governmental intention from the early stages of Meiji, and many poor and workers resided. When the postwar period came, the temporary accommodations for disaster victims were prepared by Tokyo Metropolitan Goverment, and these changed to the simple accommodations of the permanent building. When rapid economic growth came soon, it corresponded to the rise of demand for labor, and it developed as a place of simple worker's reservation. About 300 simple hotels were built and located in a line in 1961, and it became a place of residence in which about 20,000 workers gather. In recent years, the use as a cheap hotel by the foreigners (backpacker) who come for a travel to Japan from each country instead of the conventional workers is increasing to simple accommodations. The motion of liking to promote a foreign user's use is seen by the owners of simple accommodations, such as enriching guidance of the English notation in an institution.
