This shot shows the garish colour near Shinjuku Station on the next day when a spring storm swept the sky, which is the same day as the previous post. This time the perspective is tipically compressed by a telephoto lens.
Ricard (ricard)'s shot gave me an inspiration.
I didn't press the shutter button until the moment of a lot of passers-by crossing the road in a hurry and two trains running.
About 2,200 trains per day cross this plate girder bridge, and the average number of daily users at Shinjuku Station is 3,640,583.

Kon ban wa, Hisashi,
Excellent work! Fine colours and good details! TFS!
trekks (14348) 2009-05-18 21:30
This colorful shot reminds me of Kodakchrome slide and Kodak film quality. I am amazed at how you can get through upload of this 308kb size [properties of photo vs the photo info 299kb, I suppose the real size could be 299kb to get through. Some server compression after upload?] but I can see more pixels go into play for this scene.
This is superb quality and fit for a magazine cover. I have to commend equally the original photo of Ricard, but you have pursued it further and make vast improvements to the scenery and composition.
Although not as your earlier long exposures, this 1/1600s in incredibly sharp for the bright light condition, and really makes the capture able to display so much details.
The long focal length helps to compress and reduce the depth but you have used only FL100mm, which means you are quite near to the scene.
Very nice work.
ribeiroantonio (22637) 2009-05-18 21:49
I t is an impressive view. Takes a while to go through the immense amount of detail but it is worth the effort. The colours are really beautiful too. Well done.
PixelTerror (0) 2009-05-18 21:53
Nice urban view, the extreme business of the scene gives well the feeling of a big metropolis and yep all these colors add to the overloaded impression we get from there, the may signs too.
Have a nice day jY

A very beautiful urban shot that proves that Shinjuku is busy, busy, busy.
Very well detailed, with beautiful colours and excellent sharpness.
Best regards, Paul

Great shot Hisashi!
I have been through Shinjuku on numerous occasions when visiting Tokyo. I think you did a really greeat job in capturing the 'controlled chaos'. Trains, cars, people, signs, buildings- you got it all!
I would love to see this scene at night, taken with a long exposure- sure it would be amazing.
sevy (58) 2009-05-18 23:19
Not often you are posting a photo with a telezoom ;-)
I think it was the right choice to increase the color impact of all those advise on the buildings.
I like also the use of the shadow in foreground, it increase the perception of the overall contrast of this photo.
PS: thanks for the trick of exposure when using wide angle lens. I will do some trials to see if with my lens I will have to put the same -2/3 correction on the camera.
ktanska (27644) 2009-05-19 0:36
It is the ultimate cityscape. A screen full of action and details. Tight framing with tele really packs the scene. You really knew what to wait for of the pedestrians and trains.
nwoehnl (122) 2009-05-19 1:00
こんにちは Masashi. This photo really conveys Shinjuku in a nutshell. Good rendering of the busy layers of traffic at the bottom, backed by the typical tall building with the colorful advertisement billboards. I can see the Yamanote Line on the bridge :). Excellent lighting rendering a very vivid - almost joyful - range of colors. Well captured. It reminds me the opening scene of the movie "Lost in Translation", when Bill Murray is arriving by Taxi in Shinjuku, looking outside the window at a scenery like this one.
phwall (6785) 2009-05-19 1:47
Now that's what I would call a very busy shot, look at all those sign, look at all the buildings!!!
Beautiful sharp clean capture, so much depth and detail, a wonderful image.
pauloog (11751) 2009-05-19 2:06
A view that renders well the busy and colourful atmosphere of Tokyo at rush hour. Well composed with the two horizontal layers of the walking people and the train altenating with the vertical lines of the buildings.
jimmyjimmy (28) 2009-05-19 3:38
Great image of Shinjuku. The sharness is wonderful and details the image well. The composition is good with the thought you put into it. Thanks for the info on the area.
mkamionka (36711) 2009-05-19 3:46
beautiful jaw-dropping composition.
I like it for being so rich, so crowded with various elements and colors.
Fantastic, very well chosen POV.
Congratulations and TFS,
worldcitizen (8648) 2009-05-19 7:24
I love it! The colors...the action...the large amount of details stuffed into one frame. Your idea to wait for all the people crossing the street, and the train coming by, was perfect. I have been to Tokyo two times and I miss it!
fulvio52 (8314) 2009-05-19 8:35
Multi-layered, flamboyant, and wonderfully chaotic. Colors and definition are superb, and I'm amazed at the amount of sharpness you've been able to retain within those 300kb limitations. TFS, buddy! Have a great day,
I'll be seeing you.
ruisc_pt (10892) 2009-05-19 10:19
Fantastic pattern you got here from this urban POV

sagar (2410) 2009-05-19 12:23
A very very urbanised place you show here. Lots of elements, lots of colors , a jungle of concrete, crowd and vehicles on the street....all portrying a fast urban life, something which Japan is known for. I liked the order and neatnes of the city amidst the madding chaos.
MarcT (20964) 2009-05-19 19:53
I never saw that city but your picture shows an incredibly dense place. Excellent colors and light.
axiotea (21651) 2009-05-19 20:29
Vow! It looks pretty busy ;)
Almost same shot than Ricard but here with the addition of the road going below the bridge and a well time captured on the people crossing it. you've got for this one a better light and a bluer sky that resulted in a bright image.
Cretense (68703) 2009-05-20 5:26
Wow, amazing photo, a fantastic "mosaic" or "palimpsest", makes me dizzy, so many things to see, so much "information" but that's how big cities really are! Excellent capture of modern architecture nad modern life, great perspective compression, excellent framing and composition! Perfect light managment and brilliant colours! Congratulations!
Philippe (11836) 2009-05-20 12:26
Hi, Hisashi. A very colourful picture and very lively too with the trains passing and the people crossing the street. Your telephoto lens brings the buildings close to each other, which creates an ensemble of varied colours. A good picture of urban life. The figures in your note are really impressive.
Have a nice day,
litiancai (1048) 2009-05-21 4:44
I've never been to Japan, but this is exactly what I imagine it to be like! I guess I like it because it panders to my stereotypical view of Japan. The scene is so busy, yet also lively through the bold colours through out. This shot was captured with nice light!
All the best
Tue (36938) 2009-05-21 6:55
What a fantastic and impressive impression of the busy city life. There are so many details to see and discover here. The view is very colourful, thanks to the fine light as well. Thanks for sharing!

riclopes (35577) 2009-05-22 2:18
That's a very busy image, Hisashi. You got good light conditions and the resulted graphism is amazing. It totally trasmites the urban scenery of a big city and how busy it gets. Excellent use of the tele zoom, perfect timming for all the "ants" crossing the street.
have a nice day,
patdeph (35748) 2009-05-22 4:00
this picture of the town with so much colours is tatally incredible! That offers an atonishing but splendid graphism !You impress me very much with the 2 200 trains per day, this is crazy!Fantastic picture!

I have no words for such magnificent photo.
It's an eye-catcher from the thumbnail, and when you open appear a fantastic world.
It's really pleasant looking at.
gary91 (15348) 2009-05-24 8:44
Very impressive image.
The various layers formed by the numerous building of various colours combined to the crowd in front crossing the street and the trains passing by are building an incredible live spectacle.
The quality of this image is outstanding and I am impressed by such a quality.
Have a nice Sunday.
Best regards, Christian
dragonslayero (3116) 2009-05-24 23:10
Wow, this sure brings back memories...
To actually just see a scene and instantly feel that I've been there... that has to count for something.
I find the overall scene to be somewhat cluttered, but I guess that is part of what makes this photo special. Tokyo is well known to be a crowded and cluttered space.
The quality of the shot is what suprizes me. Very nice angle of the light, it really sneaks into every crevasse of the photo and light everything up beautifully.
But perhaps that is also what makes the photo slightly bad too. The light is a little unwelcome on some of the surfaces, overexposing those areas and genereally giving them some slighty negative attention.
However... overall I find the scene to be a very welcomed one, especially since I rememberthis place very good.
Thanks for sharing.
ElAprendiz (30) 2009-05-25 8:49
Making impressive. A sense of upheaval, dynamic and modern, reflects this image.
The frame provides a well balanced composition, despite the large number of elements, and colors and forms of advertising, giving a great effect on the environment.
Special greeting from Colombia, John

This is how I imagine Japan - the densely-packed buildings, the adverts and signs everywhere, sleek modern trains gliding along, lots of men in suits! I know that there are lots of other sides to the country, but this how I've always imagined it.
One day I must go and see for myself!
Great shot Hisashi, I like how you compressed the perspective, making the whole urban scene appear even more densely packed than it was in reality.
azizbilgili (2111) 2009-05-30 5:12
It is an impressive view and very nice POV
stego (24132) 2009-06-01 11:01
It's impressive how you managed to get such an accomplished compo with all that chaos of shapes and colours. The fact is that it is a very attractive photo, full of the life of that city.
Angshu (56758) 2009-06-03 0:43
This sure shows your burstling metropolis is real light...people, traffic, dense buildings, billboards - the details we can see here are endless. Busy, busy, busy...reminds me of a scene from the film Lost in Translation as well. Good light, fantastic clarity in this excellent picture!
avene (12675) 2009-06-03 5:07
there's no better way to show a busy and crowded city that to use telephoto for flattened perspective, and your photo is an excellent example, I like it a lot. dazzling amound of colours and details, and crisp light is just right to bring all that in focus. great shot, my compliments.
clio (27961) 2009-06-15 11:32
Hi Hisashi ,
For me this photo is really extraordinary. It is so different from my universe in Paris. It is incredible to see so many colored signboards.
I also like a lot all the various shots with the play of the vertical and horizontal lines.
Disabled_A (0) 2009-06-19 12:44
... incredible view! the place looks absolutely, fully "packed up" with all kinds of stuff! towers, wires, people, advertisements, cars, bridge, train... and a bit of the blue sky :)
Oh yes, a modern megapolis... I hope to see Tokyo in reality one day!
PS. 1/1600! the place was really VERY brightly sunlit!
anirban_c8 (23) 2009-06-24 11:42
really great shot, it shows the concrete jungle, neon and the urban life.

abulafia (4900) 2009-07-12 3:31
What a crowded city shot.
Lots and lots of colors, and only small patches of sky. I like that you waited for the train to complete the busy setting.

You could make a colourful "puzzle" by using that beautiful shot ! I would buy it in a bookstore or anywhere!
That´s quite amazing to see but it would be too much stress and crowdy for living ( ... my opinion ... )

What a busy city, good pov and lively shoot to show the crowd, transportations and architectures within a shoot, it is too many 'things' inside this photo, I spend a minute to look on each architectures and the bisy street, thanks for sharing the amazing city view.
macjake (67748) 2010-09-26 4:06
one of my all time favorite shots!

A superb cityscape rich, very rich, in various details and in colors very well colected. A very good and interesting capture of the athmospher in a modren big city.
Have a nice week,
cemsg (117) 2011-03-09 18:44
by chance saw this frame and is immediately captivated by it. I have used the same combination of camera and lens, that is 5D MkII with 70-200mm I won't get that richness of colors here. I guess the weather condition and the filter play their parts as well.
Agree that this frame is nicely captured with a long lens, and the train and passengers make it more dramatic.
smash2707 (3320) 2012-12-18 7:52
Crowded composition which transmits the hectic life in a big city such as Tokyo. I love that so much is going on. Nice colors, perfect sharpness. TFS
