Photographer's Note

This photograph is the main gate of Gakushuin located along as Meiji street in Toyama of Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo. This main gate is ones built at the time of the Gakushuin foundation in 1877. It is designated as the important cultural property of the country in 1973. Gakushuin was established by Kyoto in the idea of the Emperor of those days as the Imperial Court's school in 1847. Although abolished at once by the Meiji Restoration, it revived as the nobility's (The feudal lord till then - Imperial Court) school in 1877. It is a school with the oldest history in Japan. From the time of foundation in early stages of Meiji, Gakushuin opens an educational door widely also to a woman. The source of the education of girls of Gakushuin is in "the education of elegance of the refined style" aimed at at this time. The full-scale education of girls in Gakushuin started by opening a school of the nobility girls' school in 1884.

- Put educational foundations on "moral education."
- Abandon the "overemphasis-on-intellectual-education principle" of only knowledge.
- Respect the height of "mind", "dignity", and "taste" as the nobility.

In the nobility girls' school, simple and sturdy character has been cultivated under such education philosophy those days which was asked for the female image of gentleness and chastity. Now, the woman's junior high school, woman's high school, and woman's college are established in this site.
