Photographer’s Note

Odaiba is the name of a Tokyo district developped on man created islands in the Tokyo bay. Its first purpose was to protect Tokyo against sea attacks, but in the 90's it was turned into a discovery and entertainment area and became a tourist attraction as well.

A combination of futurism, shopping centers, museums and recreation areas, Odaiba also hosts the headquarters of Fuji television, an impressive building partly open to the public that offers nice views of Odaiba and Tokyo as well as the possibility to witness TV activities going on.

I may show the entire building later but on this photo I have chosen to focus on the "Sphere", definitely what makes it characteristic and to me convenient to match the title of this nice movie as well as to enhance its futuristic and sci-fi-esque design. On the terrace below the sphere you can see people and imagine how big and heavy it is.

Not sure it will be as attractive as the Fagnes as a subject but I hope you'll like it ;-)

Surprenant cette structure! Et dans la sphère il y quoi? En tout cas je me réjouis de voir cet "immeuble" dans son ensemble car là j'ai un peu de mal imaginer...
Une belle compo graphique avec la sphère bien placée dans un des points forts de l'image. Une sphère comme ça au milieu des Fagnes ça pourrait être une idée! ;o)

Je trouve amusant de voir ton parcours à Kyoto et Tokyo et d’apprécier ta démarche photographique. Nous partageons plusieurs lieux que nous avons capturés sous des angles totalement différents et par conséquent, je trouve beaucoup d’intérêt dans tes photos qui me font découvrir des points de vue alternatifs.

Ce siège social est en effet très impressionant et comme toi, j’ai focusé sur la sphère. Cependant, j’aime beaucoup ta composition où les lignes verticales sont bien centrées alors que la sphère respectent la règle des tiers. Il s’agit d’une superbe photo de cette structure audacieuse.

Hi Jean, I like the straight lines in this. Pictures of this building are usually shot up close with a lot of distortion, this one has not. I remember the globe as being silver but it actually has a copper tint to it, I see. Thanks, Gilbert

A very futuristic shot here, and I like the crop which focuses on the shapes and lines to create an almost abstract view. The inclusion of the ant-like people shows well the scale. Not perhaps the most attractive of subjects but certainly an interesting view to spark the imagination.

Ca penche un poil à gauche et juste pour faire ch*er, je me dis que cela se doit non pas à une inclinaison de ton bras mais à un abus inconsidéré de Sake de la part des ouvriers nippons pendant la construction de cette émulation de la station MIR en plein Tokyo. On ne peut pas dire qu'ils ont véritablement perdu la boule tellement elle est grande; mais pour une structure architecturale devant résister aux tremblements de terre, et malgré le fait qu'en la matière mes connaissances s'approchent du 0 absolu, il me semble..comme ça vu de loin...que cela aurait autant de succès que mes constructions de Lego lorsque j'étais petit.

You surely like being unpredictable! I like the way you picked details and made the composition of basic forms. Of course the architect has some influence on it too. Copper tone of the sphere is nice.

j'aime beaucoup la manière dont tu as composé autour de ce sujet, la Sphère se retrouve sur cette structure et ton cadrage donne un aspect très graphique que j'apprécie.
Les gens semblant être dans une grande fourmillière.
Au niveau des couleurs, je te propose un petit WS pour redonner un peu la pêche à celles-ci.
Qu'en penses-tu?

Jean Yves, c'est très graphique et futuriste on se croirait dans une science-fiction. La composition est très rigoureuse et les humains donnent l'échelle du monument.

et bien, ce sont les laveurs de vitre qui sont heureux ... euh il reste une trace là ...
j'aime bcp ta version qui se base plus sur la geometrie de l'edifice, par contre tu n'as pas corrige les perspectives et on a l'impression que ça penche (en haut à droite) ... en tout cas c'est bien geré pour l'expo. Bien vu

Je detecte une legere distorsion quand meme ;o) sur la premiere passerelle. Surprenante cette structure, ca serait un bon lieu de tournage pour un film catastrophe. Ca fait tres station spaciale quand meme. Jolie photo, tres esthetique je trouve.

Great eye to see this! The combination of the curved shape of the sphere and the straight lines of the building work very well together, with each one showing off the shape of the other by contrasting with it. The people visible in the building give an idea of the scale too. Well done!

Ouais ouais,
Ben je ne ferai pas 20.000 km en avion pour voir une palotte copie de l'atomium, la boule n'est même pas placée dans le coin ici...
Ils copient mal les Japonnais maintenant, ils avaient sans doute photographié notre monument avec un 350D hein?

T'as raison pour la note, je préfère...ben tu sais quoi!

j'aime beaucoup ta prise de vue rapprochée, ça rend cette image très graphique.
Et puis tout est bien droit.
Et puis ça fait travailler l'imagination, on s'imagine comment sera le bâtiment en entier.
Tout ça pour dire que j'aime bien et que j'attends la vue au 10 mm maintenant ! ;-)

Très chouette ton cadrage, ca lui donne une touche graphique.
Euhhh, pour info, les gens sur la "passerelle" se trouvent à combien de mètres? t'as une idée ?
Moi ca me foutterait presque un peu le vertige ;)

Hello Jean Yves, I like the composition with the sphere as the dominant subject and placed off centre at the top. The straight lines can't help but lead the eye around the frame. Nice glint of the sun on the sphere too.

Je l’ai déjà vu passer hier, j’ai donc attendu que ça ce calme pour commenter !
J’aime beaucoup celle-ci, pour le côté graphique, les couleurs et la lumière qui semble caresser cette sphère.
Je voulais écrire caresser la boule, mais je savais qu’après les treads de l’autre jours, vous alliez prendre ça pour une avance….
Ta meilleure, et de loin depuis ton retour du Japon ! J’étais pas un grand fan des première…
Je pense que ça commence à monter en qualité là….

As an architect, of course I love this unusual example of architecture which is really an impressive building with an attractive futurist sci-fi design. The graphic result of your perfectly composed image is wonderful and it is amazing how that sphere intersects the ortogonal structure shape of the building. Interesting theme...

I wonder what made you decide to choose a close-up as opposed to a shot of the whole building? Whatever, it really is a good photo and very eye-catching. I think you've produced a very geometrically accurate shot that suits the subject perfectly - all the lines are nice and straight and the angles are square. I think this would look exceptional in the early evening when they've switched on the lights.

Salut Jean-Yves, j'aime bien cette compo avec la boule super bien placée et ces lignes qui découpent très bien l'image. La profondeur de champ bien gérée donne presque un aspect de maquette. L'espace est très bien géré.

Bonjour Jean Yves, je la trouve très chouette cette "sphère" et cette mise en scène, très soignée et travaillée, le cadrage met en évidence cette bizarrerie architecturale, sans parler de la netteté du cliché, j'aime vraiment bcp :)
Faut croire que je deviens sensible aux motifs géométriques et aux perspectives avec éléments de répétition car je ne commente que ça en ce moment ;)
Superbe Jean Yves, comme d'hab' quoi ;)
PS : tu as tout à fait raison pour le copyright concernant une photo que j'avais l'intention de publier, t'as bien fait de m'avertir, c'est le genre de choses auxquelles je ne pense qu'après coup ;)

C'est la 'glowing sphere' qui m'a dirigée sur cette photo qui a, à mon avis, plus d'impact graphique. C'est très esthétique et les gens placés sur une des passerelles, nous fait bien comprendre la grandeur de cette impressionnante construction. Le reflet du soleil saisi sur le globe est un plus.

interessante costruzione dalla quale hai potuto realizzare una piacevole foto con una eccellente nota di grafismo.
