This photograph is taken in Meiji Shrine in Tokyo Harajuku. When I got down from Harajuku Station, several sets of children dressed up taken to parents or grandparents were walking. I understood that they are families who go by congratulation of Shichi-Go-San to Meiji Shrine. I walked along the approach in the interest half, and went to the main shrine. I saw that they took the commemorative photo in the courtyard, and many parent and child went into shrine pavilions, and had received the pray from a Shinto priest at main shrine. Shichi-Go-San is an annual event of Japan which celebrates a child (7 years old's, 5 years old's, and 3 year-old's) growth. The origin is said as start in 1681 to have wished for the health of the eldest son of Tsunayoshi Tokugawa who is a 5th generation of Edo Shogunate general. It is a ceremony which the boy and girl of 3 years old, the boy of 5 years old, and the girl of 7 years old hold. Although it is an annual event which celebrates child growth and visits a shrine, a temple, etc. on November 15, it carries out more often on Saturday, Sunday, and the public holiday of either of November, without being scrupulous on November 15 now. It's a tradition that 3 years old grows hair, 5 years old wears a hakama first time and 7 years old are vestiges which carry out the fashion of an adult called the kimono and one-piece sash. There are more Japanese clothes according to full dress and clothes in the present age. And, at this time, a girl makes up her face for the first time.
Shichi means seven.
Go means five.
San means three.

This is a fine portrait of this very sweet girl with a lovely smile. Her clothes are beautiful and she is obviously proud and happy of being so nicely dressed and taking part in this ceremony. The light is very good, sharpness is perfect and you have cropped the photo very well.

The colorful dress and the child's smile put a smile on the viewer's face. I like the tight crop and the blurred background. Very well done, TFS.

A beautiful photo. Perfectly arranged in vertical frame. I like the pose and that the face is not concentrating on your camera. Excellent light and very good POV choice. Perfect child photo, well done.
