Photographer’s Note

In this otherewise sombre scene the flowers gave a touch of life.

This gentle and serene figure is known as Jizo, a Japanese Bodhisattva. Japanese Buddhists believe that Jizo assists the wandering souls of deceased children and those condemned to Hell. Jizo figures at Hase-dera in Kamakura are placed here by parents that hae lost young infants or have miscarried.

Err...Uhmmm...
The shot itself is very nice, great graphical patterns which I have never tried to take. Yes, it's great.

Maybe because I am Japanese so I don't feel easy when I see a shot of Jizos especially just as you said in the note, they are for assisting souls of deceased children and so on. I feel like as if I see souls of children in the shot... Oneday I happened to take shots of Jizos in a temple and it made me feel very uncomfy and scared as if my camera really caught some floating souls and I would see them in the shots.

I am telling you this because this one offers a good chance to know different ideas of different people on the earth. "Learn about the world through photography", you know. I assure you that the shot is very very nice.

Very often it's simplicity that makes a picture nice. Your picture confirms this statement.
Very often it's a contrast that makes a picture nice. Here: multi-coloured, disordered nature vs mono-coloured, ordered Jizo's.
In short: good shot.

Now I like the repetition here very much, and the addition of some colour is very good as well, but why did you pcik those really ugly chrysanthemums?? ;-)
Nice PoV, Elaine! I am very fond of the way they hold their hands, it looks as if (and they are, probably) carrying something very precious.
Mongolian people holds their hands like that when you give them something, and I know of countries in Africa who accept their food like that. I like it, it's a very nice gesture.

our second Jizo -
the turning tide brings flowers
to kamakura

I've never physically been to Kamakura but I have exhibited some work there and have communicated with people living there (nearby) or visiting - I might have gone two years ago but life took different turns.Your picture connects me to something beyond the photography - fine and beautifully observed as it is.

For many reasons I feel connected with Kamakura - visually, through haiku, through friendships and collaborations, spiritually - this picture of Jizo connects me with the loss of two of our children who weren't to be - so it is a very emotional and a very gentle and beautiful picture to see such a place to give them a home. Sad but also comforting to see their Buddha nature amongst so many others.

If I ever do go perhaps there is something I would like to do now.

Vwey nice picture. Geometrical pattern picture, broken on geometry and more important: on colours with the flowers, semi focused, not to distract to much the viewer. Great shot, great idea.
