Photographer’s Note
This is the captain of the boat that took us out to sea to see the ice floes and sea eagles I'll be uploading tomorrow. This is the best of a couple of shots of him, but it's a little blurred in places as he moved during what was a relatively long exposure (for a long lens) in the dim light shortly after dawn.
He was concentrating on picking up smelly fish heads and squid to throw onto the ice to attract the eagles. I also found when I got back to the bus that he'd splash the back of my nice new down-jacket with fish oil. A small price to pay for the trip though. :-)
I chose to desaturate this photo to add to the mood. You can see a colour version here on my Web site if you're interested.

Excellent shot, perfect for b/w. I can see some blur sround his face but it does not disturb. I like the expression and the way he enjoy his cigarette. He looks tough, a classical sea-man. very very good shot.

Hi martin. i like the color version too. the colors make it even stronger IMO. still a good shot as is. the blur is not a problem here, for the cigarette is very well in focus. i like it!

I think this photo looks a bit washed out. I think there needs to be more contrast. It doesn't seem to me that there is a true black or white, it just all looks grey. Also the lint or dirt on the jacket's shoulder bothers me; I would clone that out in photoshop. Maybe next time you could leave the option of a workshop.
