Photographer's Note

This photograph is taken in Yūbari-shi, Hokkaido. It was located in the central part of Hokkaido, and it prospered as a central city of the Ishikari coalfield once. So, it prospered as a town of a coal mine from the early stages of Meiji period, and produced much coal especially also in the Sorachi district. It was proud of the success as a domestic leading coal field area, and proud of a population of 110,000 in the golden age. However, while the main energy in society changed with oil from coal, the town also declined gradually and all the coal mines carried out the closed mountain in 1990. Since Yūbari is the town of the coal mine from the first, and it does not turn to large-scale agriculture, industrial infrastructure other than coal industry. As a result, there is no saucer of employment an alternative to the coal industry. Young workers flowed into the city, and population decreased sharply, only 9,800 residents now. And, the ratio of population aged 65 and over is 44% in the city. It was financial collapse in 2007. Although it consists of the tourist industry with a focus on melon cultivation and movie industry etc, it has not come to absorb the employment. This photograph was taken while I was walking along the main street of the city in the early morning. The signboard of the premier movie of former years is built in this way by here and there of the town. And, on the right-hand side of the street, the building of Yūbari's Chamber of Commerce and Industry stood desolately so that the present condition of this city might be shown.
