Photographer’s Note
This shot of ice pillars in a cave in Rausu was taken in the afternoon of the second day of my photo trip to Hokkaido in Feb 2004.
In answer to Nina's question:
Did you turn this one upside down or were they like that?
- Nope! The photo is exactly as it was taken. These are stalagmite ice pillars, growing from the ground up. I have a wider photo that includes the stalactite pillars too growing down from the roof of the cave, but it doesn't make for a very effective photograph.

Nice shot here, I do wonder if it is upside down sometimes, but it isnt and thats what makes it special, great detail and close up.
I didnt see this when I was there this Feb 04.

Splendid photo! The pillar's texture is excellent -- I can almost feel the dampness in there...
Well done Martin!

On dirait une armée de fantomes....Superbes textures..
L`effet des teintes noires et blanches sur fond de couleurs est remarquable....
Tres bien vu!!!

I saw a documentary on TV about stalagmite ice pillars, which I found very interesting. Your photo has allowed me to see them in a good close up view. Thanks.
Good macro, and sharp detailing on the ice. Well done.
Sorry ran out of points. (2)
