This photograph is taken alongside the pier of the Otaru harbor in Hokkaido in spring of eight years ago. Otaru faced the Ishikari bay and it developed as a harbor city for many years. Although it is a bed town of the distance for 30 minutes to Sapporo by train, population decreases and it is specified as the depopulated area in recent years. It prospered in transportation out of the way of the coal produced in the Ishikari district and trade with Russia till the middle of the 20th century. And, there was second population city of Hokkaido in the golden age. However a function as a harbor declines by the fall of coal demand and maintenance of the Tomakomai harbor in the Pacific Ocean or the neighboring Ishikari new harbor, the population is also decreasing by no less than 35% from the golden age. Now, Otaru advances material and human exchanges outside the area centering on the present "food correlative industry" and the "tourist industry", and it is building high added value type industrial structure. Although this photograph was taken in early April, snow coverage still remained in the wharf. In the opposite shore of a bay like a lead, some cargo ships were at anchor.

Very well composed photo. The blue bollards are excellent focal points in this nice image. There is a great use of depth of field to hold the viewer in the foreground bollards as well as ships in BG, and the excellent lighting conditions have allowed for very good color saturation. The overall impact is very strong.
Very well done.
Wish you a very nice weekend.

What a great view, lovely splash of vivid colours adding strong contrast to the setting with an obvious link to the busy looking harbour. The prominent bollards add lots of life and lead successfully into the scene with nice colours, light and depth. Great photo work, Congrats.

You've got a nice view of the Otaru harbor through and around these rusty bollards. It looks like the place is pretty industrial, or should I say post-industrial?
