And now for something completely different.....for me at least.

I took delivery of my new Canon EOS 1D Mark2N just before a trip to Japan and pretty much every photo I took on that trip was an experiment with my new camera. It was a dark and rainy day in Hiroshima and to get any decent shutter speed I needed to set the ISO at 1600 knowing full well I would have noise to deal with. Nonetheless I liked the way this one turned out.

I have discovered that TE'ers are a fickle breed and are often times difficult to please. I think we all submit photos we think will be well-received only to be left wondering what went wrong. No matter, the game is what it is and everybody plays by the same rules....whatever they are....and I like to play. It's the thrill of victory or the agony of defeat with every post.

Hi Gregory
I love it! Simple and beautiful.
I like the crop and the way you placed the people in it, catching a complete shadow in the lower corner, and the very few colors, makes it look like you converted to B+W and then kept the colors on the bag and umbrellas.
The noise suits it as well.

Hi Gregory,

What a well seen scene .. beautiful colors .. I love the reflections .. great composition .. I think the noise works with this in a strange way .. striking crop as well. Striking image.

take care,

John

I like tour work (Yes ! Work !), tremedously, Greg.

I'm fully aware it's been seriously trimmed to achieve the final results as they are, but...
It's always the final effect that really counts.

These 'Les Parapluis De Cherbourg' - Japanese edited version - is as cute as a bud, and can satisfied the most refined eye.

No reason to be depressed, pal.

......................

The frilled, 'oh, so cute' frame, with even more cute dropped shadow...?

I'l tell you the secret, Greg...
(whisper)...
Your photo is so damn good and standing so well on its own legs - it doesn't need any extra make up (?) But, don't say about it to anyone...shhhhh

Hi Gregory,
Simply great! I like the format you have chosen it suits the shot nicely. A very well balanced shot with the group of umbrellas right at the top of the shot and the umbrella at the bottom. Love the graininess and atmosphere.

Hi Greg,

Nice format here, lots of dynamism and brilliant idea.

not a bad one...in my opinion the quality is very good, the focus
is made on the shadow, lovely tones, but something in the composition I don't like...not very balanced I think ,and narrow framing at top.Well done!Have a great day

Hi Gregory,

this is very bold framing, not usual. But it is absolutely excellent. You did framed great composition of two related motives. BW work is in place and leaving upper umbrellas colourfull gives this capture quite symbolic meaning: silhuette in the bottom (loneliness, solitude) and group of girls above (company, joy, chit chat...). Grainy output does not bother, just opposite, I think it gives this capture additional plus, a feeling of rainy gray day. Excellent work!

Kind regards,
Jeri

wow, love the shot, awesome framing... getting the solitary person with umbrella, then the high school girls at the top AND managing to get the full reflection of the solitary umbrella weilding person!
... I guess that's the choice of cropping that has really made the shot!

THANK YOU!

Hi Gregory,
very well seen and original format.
Looks like that the picture was partially desaturated...
Love the umbrellas... very photogenic.

I tell you the truth. This one is a victory. Nice framing so vertical, with the repetition of these umbrellas. In a first step, this shot is very easy to read and finally, many details just show up. TFS. Geraldine

I like this shot here Gregory, capturing one of the essences of Japan...the umbrella. I like your composition, was there quite a bit of distracting elements that you chose to crop it like this, or just a personal preference? I do like the cropping, perhaps a bit too narrow, but only slightly.

Regards,
David
