First day of snow for the snow monkey of Japan

Today is the first day of snow!

This is the monkey of the film Baraka: Baraka (1992) is a Todd-AO (70 mm) non-narrative film directed by Ron Fricke. A must see for all nature fans.

Many of us are now familiar with images of monkeys soaking up the watery warmth of a hot spring in the midst of a bone chilling, wintery landscape. These are the Snow Monkeys, or Japanese macaques of Japan, living at latitudes of 41° to 31° north of the equator, the only monkeys to live that far north in the world.

The Japanese macaque lives throughout Japan, with a range covering subtropical lowlands to sub alpine regions. The great differences in habitats have made it necessary for the macaques to adapt to large seasonal changes. In the central and northern areas of Japan the temperatures can range from 5° F (-15° C) and snow more than 1 meter deep in the winter, to 73.4° F (23° C) in the summer.
In the central region of Japan the monkeys can be found in the Nagano Mountains near a number of natural hot springs heated by the Shiga Kogen volcano.

Hi Michel,

I do not know why but this photo reminds me of Odyssey 2001...
The birth...
Just a monolite is missing, although I can see it in those blocks behind the most fantastic motive, the face.
Superb atmopshere with the monkey coming out from the mist...a little bit dreamy...a photo of creative imagination...fantasy...
Even the scene, with its colors, reminds me of one of the best movies ever made...

Bonjour Michel,
Je connais ce film, c'est un excellent documentaire, même si, dans le même style, je préfère l'original : Koyaanisqatsi (u connais ?).
C'est une jolie photo animalière. Ce n'est pas ma spécialité mais j'apprécie ce macaque parmi ce milieu glacé. L'expression troublante des singes est toujours imparable je trouve. Il se dégage de plus de cette photo une certaine sérénité tout japonaise. Vraiment chouette.

un joli contraste de couleurs ici! C'est assez impressionnant pour en devenir presque surréaliste. Tu as beau nous rassurer au sujet de leur acclimation à de froides températures dans ta note, n'empêche celui-là a l'air pétrifié! On peut lire une telle nostalgie sur son visage; il y a de quoi avoir le coeur serré! La composition est excellente, avec le fond neigeux bien apparent. J'aime beaucoup la pose avec la main sur le bord, ausi. Et la netteté est remarquable. Bravo!
