let me pose a question to everyone who views this...do you think post processing is a good/bad thing? The reason I ask is because my sister was looking at some of my pictures (she has always commented how she likes them) and when I told her that ALL of my keepers go through some form of post processing with some type of program (ps cs3, jasc psp, dxo optics etc.), she kind of said "Ooooooohhhhhh...." like that's the reason they are nice.
I explained that all professionals do the same.....but she didn't seem convinced. Take this picture for instance. I knew what I wanted in terms of composition, but as I was driving while taking the shots, they didn't all come out great. For this shot, I had to rotate, crop, clone out some of my dashboard, sharpen and then really exaggerate with contrast and clarify. The result is more what I envisioned when I snapped away, but quite different from the original.
Is the final image still a result of "my" photographic eye, or just a contrived version?
A question to ponder.....:P

I'm suspecting that a number of TrekEarth people might not like the enhanced post-work but I really love it! Areas of the sky could use a touch of lightening but overall, nice composition and colors here! Regards, Doug
ciao
je trouve que la route est trop centrée.un peu plus à droite pour le cadrage.

Hello Damon,
don't worry for the photoshop you done... it's a great result, so why don't do it? Specially if you tell in your comments :)
This is a very beauty photo, maybe a little sharpned? Seem it is a little strong contrast... anyway, I would want to be able to use the photoshop sofware as you!
Very well done, compliments. Regards,
Davide
Damon-
Photoshop is just a tool. It is no different that Ansel Adams or Henri Cartier-Bresson spending countless hours in the darkroom, dodging and burning a image to get it just right.
As with wet darkroom work, things can be done too far. I believe that is the case with your PP work. Please understand, that this is just my opinion.
However, I believe that you should either try for the surreal, or for the real. I think you have done both here. The light areas are fake looking when compared to the darker areas. Also, there is too much burning in the sky. In my experience, the burn tool in PS is too easy to overdo. I always use it at 1% only.
As you mentioned in your note, if this is what you envisioned when you shot it, then it was an extremely successful shot.
You note is also perfect for TE.
Also, tell your sister that all pros use PS. I am one, and there isn't an image given to a client that doesn't have some work done to it in Photoshop.
Very nice post.
