Photographer’s Note
Awa no yu hotspring located in Shirahone, Nagano Prefecture. Famous for the color of the water and its supposed healing properties. This particular bath is a mixed-sex bath and, as is tradition in Japan, you enter the bath completely nude :O
It was my first time to this type of bath and I quite enjoyed it. My girlfriend, who is Japanese and had also never been to such a bath, also enjoyed it. There was no discomfort with being in a bath with complete strangers as the focus was on relaxing and enjoying the scenery. Highly recommended.
By the way, I was able to take the photo after bathing times were over. There was a road that ran right next to it at a slightly higher elevation...giving anyone walking by a very nice look into the bath...even when it is full.

What a beautiful shot, great point of view.
Would have been really awesome if you could have got the contrasting warm colours of the autumn leaves in the shot, against the cool blue colour of the water!!!
I must search out this onsen... most definately would be comfortable as co-ed... the water is milky, so you couldn't see through it, and looks as tho there are seperate changing areas anyway???
Thanks for the shot, glad you enjoyed the onsen, and may you go to many more!
