Photographer’s Note

Every morning in the mountain town of Takayama, they have a market with food and kitchenware for sale, even in the snow.

These children were at risk from one car, driving excrutiatingly slowly and about a block away. They stood like that for about five minutes before the car passed.

The best part about that morning for me was the free "amesake" at the market. It is a hot buttered rum for the Japenese; a thick, hot and sweet drink made from the rice lees, a byproduct of sake production. Sake is a good reason to visit Takayama in the winter, when all the producers have tastings and tours.

It's quite a neat photo of everyday life in Japan, and also a testimony to their patience and respect for rules I would say! It's kind of neat to see the kids dressed in the different colored snow gear, too. Nicely done.

Hello Andrew,

Wonderful shot of everyday life (in the cold of winter, that is). The bright colors serve to enliven the scene, which could otherwise be bleek and numbingly cold. I like the explanation very much.

Great daily life catch. I love the bright colours all around in the snow and the face of the man in charge! Well done. i think lightening the picture a bit and sharpening it gives it even more impact (see workshop).
