I was invited to a pottery festival in the infamous place in Seto and I stumbled across this lot of roof tiles whilst climbing up the stairs to the pottery museum, my friends thought I was lost and wondered why I hadnt entered the doors of the museum which was on the 2nd floor.
Now if you were wondering, in Japan and China, they dont have a ground floor, instead they start with 1st floor which is ground floor.
I hope you like the repeated pattern of the tiles

From the thumbnail I couldn't say if theese arer stadium seats or roof tiles. The shooting angle is wonderful, and the DoF is very good as well. I like the hight cotrast which makes this shot very special. Very well done, Daniel.
christina (2040) 2004-09-24 9:48
Nice, almost abstract image of the tiles. i like the dOF and perspective
djenno (0) 2004-09-24 9:48
Well executed, extremely interesting photo. The color and the symetric repetition reminds me of some sort of futuristic, sci-fi, scene. Great shot! Regards, Djenno
elihesamian (26149) 2004-09-24 9:49
A great POV,fine perspective and a nice playing with texture in roof, very well cropped & it's graphical ,too.
also,good in B&W.a grreat pattern & repetition you found,Well done,Daniel.
Cool-ice (5289) 2004-09-24 10:06
Graphism with light : all what I like.
The composition in diagonal is well seen here.
Excellent, Daniel !
dom_inik_m (1717) 2004-09-24 10:11
Splendid rendering of a not so obvious repetitive pattern, vanishing in the distance (though I guess I would have cropped it slightly lower, to cut the tiny little bit of sky I can glimpse)! The burnt-out patches bring a riveting rythm to this composition...
Great treatment, even if I'm usually rather dubious with B&W desaturation. How did your original shot look in color?
I created a theme, Exploring shapes and colours and would like to add your picture in it, if that's ok with you, Daniel. It seems that TrekEarthers usually don't ask to do this, but I respect too much my own posts to "grab" other people's pictures into something they may not like be associated with ; adding a picture to a theme sure shows some appreciation, but it's also a form of appropriation...
More to come, I hope! ;-)
harold (2363) 2004-09-24 10:15
Un seul mot ORIGINAL!! et très bien fait!
jrj (34841) 2004-09-24 10:30
Simple, graphical, elegant - very good Dan
nwoehnl (122) 2004-09-24 10:54
Great graphism, very well spotted Dan. The waves of the roof tiles make for a great "infinity" impression, supported by the DOF. Good stuff, well done.
GrahamB (939) 2004-09-24 10:56
Excellent. Simple graphic compositon with the tiles heading offinto the distance.Greatsharpmessin the foreground tiles.
whereami (1477) 2004-09-24 11:21
This is a really good shot - at least, I think so! Really good texture and light used here, and the pattern is very pleasing to the eye. I think I'd be tempted to crop away the top left corner so that you're left with just the tiles, but overall it's really good.
virginia (502) 2004-09-24 11:42
this is realy great one!!
eleparc (24063) 2004-09-24 11:46
bravo dany;-) your compo and your DOF are making this shot.. excellent capture! maybe a slight crop to the top left to get rid off this bit of blue sky would finish it totally;-) il like the graphic side of this shot! well done daniel!
sn00zie (2384) 2004-09-24 11:58
you come back with interesting pictures Daniel.. glad to see them again. the dof and graphism are great. the light reflecting of the tiles makes it look more interesting..
orme (7213) 2004-09-24 12:28
A brilliant photo, Daniel. Excellent perspective, DOF and texture.
Very well seen.
Spoony (3539) 2004-09-24 13:40

I like it a lot.
Fine shot Daniel.
ChristianS (2997) 2004-09-24 14:27
Beautiful symmetry and repetition. Well captured!
stranger (726) 2004-09-24 15:09
Nice shot , I like the perspective in the tiles :-)
sunny (3068) 2004-09-24 15:57
Great in simplicity and strong in graphism Dan! Love the light, the repetition of details and the grey colour. Excellent job!
dominique (11414) 2004-09-24 15:57
original, framing is powerful and prspective tiles is very interesting, beautiful work.
Jeppe (18654) 2004-09-24 16:44
Oh - very well spotted and captured - I can understand why you took this one - Great graphics and structure - thanks Dan
pamastro (7218) 2004-09-24 23:51
Very impressive capture, Daniel. The reflection of light is beautiful here and really accentuates the curves of the tiles. The dof is great here making them disappear into the distance nicely. It's a great pattern. I am just not sure about the bit of sky at the corner. I really like it but then play with not having it. In the end I think it's a great point that adds to the feel of perspective, though. Well done.
RGatward (20050) 2004-09-25 3:03
Another good graphic image Daniel, you've developed a very well trained eye. Pts tomoorrow.
supereira (9576) 2004-09-25 3:49
Good POV,framing and prespective.
Good light and texture.
Zanni (6108) 2004-09-25 4:27
Whe I read the critiques of Paul Mastrogiacomo, it is very hard to add something new. Immediately I had a sensation of full harmony and order. An harmonius order of curves, light and shadow. Well seen, Daniel
maphoto (8082) 2004-09-25 11:39
Excellent point of view and good depth, great idea, very good repetitive pattern indeed, well done.
ma-tibou (4568) 2004-09-25 12:05
Sacré Daniel, un angle de vue grandiose, il fallait y penser, résultat étonnant.
Désolée à sec demain.

ChrisJ (92167) 2004-09-26 3:04
Wow! A great study in design & repetition, with perfectly managed dof.
Catcher (845) 2004-09-26 9:41
Nice story you tell, it happens to me all the time! people must be prepared to our vanishing because when we have our cameras in hand anything can happen isn´t that right?!
I love the tiles, specially because you choose a great framing!
The light, the sharp and the constrast is very good!
Georges (11185) 2004-09-30 7:53
Très bonne réalisation graphique ici cela offre de belles courbes qui attirent parfaitement le regard.
Bravo Daniel c'est un bon coup d'oeil.
wr1611 (199) 2004-10-02 6:40
a simple object, with a neat perspective angle...
carmem_busko (3718) 2004-10-04 10:25
Excellent pattern composition. I added it to my favorites. Very well done.
France (125) 2004-10-06 6:49
Your picture shows the perfection of the tiles and the regularity of their placement. It's a really perfect composition too with the pattern that converges towards the left corner and finishes in the blur. Good control of exposition with all the tones between black and white points. I like the graphics.
glopez (18) 2004-10-06 17:37
super shot, the patterns are riveting, the light created by the sun on these tiles are wonderful
joseelias (0) 2004-10-13 8:33
Fantastic shot. The POV is great and the overall softness very well captured.
paido (944) 2004-10-14 7:17
Impressive shot. As avigur_11 said, at first I thought of stadium seats.
The tiles are creating a great pattern and your shooting angle is catching the nice mix of shadows and light on the tiles.
looksimple (96) 2004-10-19 16:46
Great shot... thank´s for sharing...the angle is perfect...:)
Rinie_Hoff (9340) 2004-10-19 18:53
Hi Dan, this is a beautiful picture, I missed that, but digging in your portfolio, I was happy to see this one. The repetitive patterns are really great and the sunlight and the curves make it a beautifil picture. I really love it. Very well seen!
robyrad (610) 2004-11-08 3:57
Fantastic pic! I like this kind of pattern.
Brightness is great and shooting angle is wonderful.
sayzey (2358) 2004-11-26 20:38

Immagine molto interessante, la forma delle tegole è ben delineata, tecnicamente ben eseguita
zeus (1462) 2004-12-13 7:13
i really enjoy pictures about tiles, I don´t know why....i also have a picture with tiles. The angle choosen is very well done....great shot with nice colors.
faubry (35373) 2005-01-02 18:42
photo peu commune et quelque peu irréel, la couleur bleu métallisé des tuiles rend cette scéne un peu futuriste
markoci (3927) 2005-01-08 8:50
very graphic, i love the pattern indeed. great shot daniel! tfs.
jiekuan (332) 2005-01-12 1:32
Good DOF and composition, the color is just nice and soft. It is good to take this shot diagonally.
Ning (359) 2005-01-12 23:05
Yes, this is a good shot. If you had a second chance, maybe you could have placed an object of a contrasting colour, like red or orange, in the top left quadrant, to break the monotony.
paulspain (625) 2005-01-16 12:45
Hello, Daniel . I only can say that this is really a Masterpiece, really artistic and full of beauty work. Congratulations , It´s perfect and amazing in its beauty.
Ah_Thong (466) 2005-02-13 2:33

keribar (43841) 2005-02-25 1:21
With this outstanding image of Japanese tiles you're falling into my favorite style, graphism and art combined. I wisk I'd taken such a picture. Good work. Keep going. Izzet
jcandeli (40) 2005-03-05 10:13
Great photo. I love the idea. I love patterns that are either found in nature or in man-made things. Especially patterns that are not meant to be aesthetic but more functional. I want to do a series of photos of those patterns much like what you have done here. Very nice clarity, lighting and composition! JP
itamaratiya (539) 2005-03-11 7:15
I have nothing more to say, but perfect!!!!
capthaddock (28790) 2005-04-12 10:42
Hi Dan - this is just fantastic, very well taken. I guess the americans adopted asian floor numbering.
archanabhimasen (270) 2005-04-15 22:19
Very nice and contemporary shot. The black and white gives all the more elegance to the picture...
seththesage (23) 2005-05-04 12:53
this photo kills me, in a great way...
i love how it tampers out of focus at the back, and the closer shingles look sharp enough to cut ...
azadys (717) 2005-06-14 13:08
wow. such a great perspective.
nice simple color and great DOF.
i like it.
stefi (1230) 2005-07-31 13:22

MLINES (12516) 2006-10-25 19:49
Hi Dan. Excellent POV / perspective ofthese tiles in perfect structure. Japanese really know how to do these simple things in an exquisite manner. I love these oriental roof tiles. Functional and art in one! Good work. Murray.
davidsinger (3360) 2006-10-27 15:59
Beautiful PoV and deepness in this shot.
DonGusti (861) 2007-04-17 15:28
Interesting idea & POV,
well done dude. TFS
fanoo (500) 2007-08-27 12:49
Hi dan !
superb composition! it is really simple and effective.
I like much the effect of texture on the tiles, and the curve of the tiles which give a dimension very graphic to the image
That resembles an image 3D
