My last post showed the elaborate funeral ceremony of the Torajans. Another intersting aspect of Torajan culture are the final resting places. The dead are placed in chiseled coffin slots in rocks or cliffs, which you can clearly see here.
Wooden effigies (Tau-tau) are placed on balconies to guard the spirit of the dead body.

Interesting topic and excellent pov, I love the contruction 'entering' the shot on the right. The kind of shot that moves Indonesia higher up on my list of places to visit...

This really seems like and enchanting place to visit. Those famous coffins and effigies. The inclusion of that magnificent roof makes this even more interesting.

A bit confusing at the first view...,but now I got it.
A good wideangleshot with this unique wooden architecture and the lodges(hope that`s correct)carved in the rock for the "dead".
I`ve never seen or heard about this ritual.

I can only imagine the intense work to dig the burial site on the rock face. It is a very interesting subject which shows very well the cultural side of the people of Sulawesi. Why do they have a house near the burial place? Well done.

Nicely built-up, Elaine - this one manages the not-so-common feat of being an excellent photograph that also manages to communicate a lot of info. WHat this site is really supposed to be all about.
