Some children collecting something – herbs, firewood... I really don't know – on the Dieng Plateau in central Java. The Dieng Plateau is known for several small Hindu temples from the 7th and 8th centuries, but the most striking feature of this desolate area, some 2000 meters above sea level, is the volcanic activity. It is often misty, as in this picture, with smoke smelling of sulphur creeping out of the ground.
A wider view of the area, when the sun hade broken through the clouds, can be seen in a workshop.
Both pictures were taken in 1976 and were scanned from Kodachrome slides. |

Another interesting image from Java about the circumstances of the kids who have to do their jobs. I have no idea what they collected. Is it tea, maybe?

Hej Gert,
This composition is very good and also quite funny with that lady hidden behind her burden. The man to the right reminds me of a mod from the sixties, is he a controller or something?

Hello Gert, Nice shot & again good work on your scanning, you have some beautiful & interesting shots & this is a good example, the quality is good, I think the child on the right makes this picture, he really stands out against the clear sky. Keep up the good work. The WS version clearly shows the smoke coming out of the ground.
