A touristic picture, nothing special photographically speaking, but has to be an integral part of my Bali Travellogue.

It would be impossible to visit or live in Indonesia and not be exposed to one of the country's most highly developed art forms, batik. On the first visit to a batik store or factory one will undoubtedly experience an overwhelming stimulation of the senses - due to the many colors, patterns and the actual smell of batik.

The word batik is thought to be derived from the word 'ambatik', an Indonesian word, which translated means 'a cloth with little dots', which describes a resist process for dying where the patterns are reserved on the textiles by tying and sewing areas prior to dying, similar to tie & dye techniques.

Batik has come to be used as a generic term which refers to the process of dyeing fabric by making use of a resist technique; covering areas of cloth with a dye-resistant substance to prevent them absorbing colors. The technique is thought to be over a thousand years old and historical evidence demonstrates that cloth decorated with this resist technique was in use in the early centuries AD in Africa, the Middle East and in several places in Asia.
Although there is no sure explanation as to where batik first was "invented", many observers believe that it was brought to Asia by travelers from the Indian subcontinent.

Tohpati, is the center of Balinese hand weaving and hand made Batik process. The Batik of Bali provides another venue of showing the artistic excellence of the Balinese people. Originally stimulated by Javanese motifs, dominated by wayang and other mythological characters, contemporary batik artists have also experienced artistic development that parallels that of paintings. Modern batik artists express themselves through various subjects, from objects of nature such as birds or fish to daily activities such as cremation (ngaben) procession or tourist attractions as well as religious and mythological stories, accompanied by modern interpretation.

We stopped at 'Bali Bidadari Batik', a huge chic shop where we saw the process of hand made Batik in progress. We picked up 2 beautiful wall hangings (one of a couple of Legong dancers, a bit abstract & the other of Ulun Danu Bratan) and a Batik T-shirt (Barong dance motif). We paid Rupiah 1,500,000 (USD 150) - quite on the expensive side.

Please do check the Workshop for two examples of modern Balinese Batik.

Hello Angshu,

wonderful composition, i loved the architecture part also other than the batik info.high roof with pillars in the corners..there must be 4 pillars holding this structure..and very good exposure control here..even if one person would have been looking at you..the image would lost its charm..and I liked the colour also..

Thanks for the WS pics..!!absolutely stunning artwork..!!

Regards
Indro

I also visited a batik factory, if I can call it factory, in Madura Island. Unfortunately, being Madura Island a very strong Muslim community I was not allowed to take pictures of the many ladies working there. Most of their batik is 100% hand made and almost all in silk (at that particular factory). As you say, it is one of finest art demonstration in fabric making.
Your photo shows us a well organised batik factory which has nothing to compare with the one I saw in Madura. The picture is very well done with nice colours and good sharpness.

Hello Angshu,
As you said this just a touristic picture and nothing special but i think this picture is well composition and perfect white border to frame it, nice vivid colours and good clarity. I really appreciated how you have great knowledge of Indonesian cultures especially the Balinese, of course you have tried to wear batik, really a confortable and warm cloths and my office has a custome to wear batik on every friday.
Thanks for the picture and especially for the very informative note.

A good informative note. Regarding the picture, the light is good, but in my opinion, there is a bit to much ceiling here, and it seems to be the result of hesitating between centering on the batik makers on the left, and keeping these very nice wooving machines on the right (especially the one with the blue cloth on the extreme right).

All the best,

Emmanuel

Back to you Bali pictures! Although I did not get to Bali, it hgets me back to many such factories I have visited in South Asia. Most of the time women working evry concentrated, surrounded by beautiful colors. very goo rendreing of this atmosphere here.

Hi Angshuman,
I'm glad they keep this traditional ancient skill being preserved today ... such a wonderful art. I had a look at the workshop and indeed it is a fine art. Wonderfully captured complimented by your very informative notes. Well done! tfs
Cheers,
Renier

Hi Angshuman,

A good capture of the women making batik. The point of view is giving depth to the photo. It is clear and precise. The luminosity brings out the colors. Well done, have a nice day.

A very interesting post Angshu. It looks like they are also weaving the fabric before applying the batik technique. The artwork in the WSs is stunning; no wonder they were so expensive as they must have taken a lot of work. (Are these the ones you bought?)Well done

hi Angshu

Batik and Indonesia or Malaysia, that is a tradition that tourists will not miss. You have found a great place to shoot, especially choosing to frame the ceiling and roof to give height and depth.

Very nice view of the batik factory. Did you buy any batik shirt or dress from the factory at discounted price?

TFS, bill

Angshu bonsoir.
Beau travail !
Jacques

This is an important reportage shot and I think it IS well done photographically speaking. The composition is balanced and the column on the left is neatly placed on a third. Managing the light in there can't have been easy, but exposure is spot on and the image is very sharp. Nice one.
Best wishes
Mark

Hello Angshuman,

The workers in their batik uniform caught my attention here. The factory itself is well crafted around the window frame and the workers are visible in working out the intricacy of batik printing.

Good light with superb details and sharpness.
