Photographer's Note

This is Jembrana in West Bali, the least touristy stretch of the island. The sand is black. Not dirty black, but naturally black, due to its volcanic origins, & the sea is calm with shallow plain sea bed.

Located about 72 kilometers west of Denpasar and a little more than 50 Km from Ubud, the area was a forest with "ketket", or thorny trees. The thorny forest means "Alas Meduwi" in Balinese. Because of this. People agreed to call it "Meduwi", then changed into the current name of Medewi. The beach is flat, stony, and has long rolling waves, so it is very suitable for surfing and sunset watching.

We stopped the car, minutes after we crossed this place, at the sight of a small habitat. A few huts...a couple of empty fishing boats lying on the beach...fishing was the main means of livelihood here. Not a soul around till I saw him, in the far distance, beyond the palm trees that fringe the beach. This shot was taken 2 minutes after this shot. He was returning home....the end of his day, his catch in a small bucket tied to his back.
