[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
While in Bali we watched a cremation ceremony in a village near Ubud. While we thought that it might have been a tourist affair, in fact it was the funeral ceremony for two village chiefs, and while there were several tourists in attendance, it was a real affair. The peole's importance can be assesed by the use of the bull sculpture to cover the coffin, as the bull is considered a poweful animal.

I had a very hard time taking photos of the event, as it began at high noon under a very harsh sun with very difficult light conditions and the procession was very disperse with too many people all over the place but not so very easy to take a photo of something specific. Only at the end when the actual burning was taken place under the shadow of some trees was I able to get some satisfactory photos.

Bonsoir Daniel

Moody scene, Daniel. I'm surprised it's okay to take a photo at a funeral. In general, you don't see too many photos at funerals in any part of the world. But I guess taking a photo of a funeral you are involved in is different entirely than treating a funeral that you have nothing to do with as an anthropological or artistic excercise. In any case . . . did you consider working down that flash on his face a bit? Giving him a flatter look might work well in this context. Best, -Hugh

Salut Daniel,
I am suprised they let you photograph the cremation event. This is certainly very interesting to us. You have handled the light very well. Fill flash was quite effective, and the composition is excellent. Regards,
Hakan

Bonsoir Daniel
Bravo
Xavier

it is ironic how some people's "daily life" becomes others' "attraction"... very interesting scene for me as i ve never witnessed such a ceremony... the bull on fire hits real hard knowing that the corpse is in it... and the light on the man's face let us know how he feels... god job daniel...

cheers

korkut

Hola Daniel
Saludos
Toni

astonishing! i'm amazed you could get so close to it to take photos - i've been around funerals in india but never dared to take any shots.

This is a great documentary work. I would never dare to take photos during a funeral, even not asking to take photos. You really managed very well the situation and the result is quite amazing. Well done.
Antonio

Hola fiera.

Specail event for sure, and interesting under the category 'daily life'. Well disposed this compo daniel, good details and at least here the light comes out rather well

Hi Daniel,
I'm allways glad to see stuff from Indonesia and to refresh my memories by pictures taken by other people sharing similar situations.
Very nice shot of the Balinese man at the cremation in Ubud.
I remember the same with the light. I took so man shots, but at least the outcome was poor.
But the cremations always start around high noon.
Best wishes,
Nino

Salut Daniel

Superbe

Salut Daniel
