Photographer’s Note

The face of this woman tells me a lot about her life in village near Lamboya on the remote island of Sumba in the far east of Indonesia. The face tells a story of a life of hard work in the sun. The Sumbanese habitually chew betel nut, but I was surprised to see she has distended ear lobes from weighted earings - not to the same extent as the Dayak of Borneo, but still quite noticeable.
For the tech heads out there, unlike the photo of the Sumba Ratu I posted 2 days ago, I used a little fill flash to highlight the skin texture (the light was very difficult) but hopefully not so much as to make it obvious.
