Photographer’s Note

On a side street to the west of Kerta Gosa is the great stone gateway the Pemedal Agung, riddled with bullet holes during the 1908 puputan (means “finishing”). I’ve taken this picture from inside the Kerta Gosa. The silhouette of the carved pillar and part of the sloping ceiling is visible on the left. & top.

The gateway’s main door, side doors, and arch are extensively carved. This tall gateway behind Kerta Gosa once led into Bali’s most splendid palace, which was destroyed in the Dutch bombardments of 1908 that resulted in the conquest of the island. A memorial to this terrible Puputan battle, that ended 600 years of glorious rule in Bali by the descendants of Majapahit, has been erected on the eastern side of regent’s office, across the road from Kertha Gosa.

The red colours have taken a richer hue due to the rains.

In the first WS, I have cropped the pillar on the left half way through to make the picture look a bit different framing wise. Pls. let me know which one you like better.

In the second WS, I've darkened the colours more, resultant a richer colour in the bricks & the sky is darker..definitely offers more contrast. But I've gone with the original, the way it actually was.
