[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Travel is not all about tourism. Some people do travel extensively for work and I am one of those. For over one year I have been traveling to Indonesia and working on this oil rig, offshore in the Sea of Java. The actual location is very close to Surabaya, and we even can see the city lights at night above the horizon. Because it is an offshore location, we travel to and from the rig by chopper.

The photo was taken with a tripod and it was a bit of a challenge to get an acceptable exposure, considering the distance to the derrick with a quite dim lighting compared with the strong flood lights. I have tried several different exposures and this is the final result.
I can see the photo has a bit too much of noise but I still do not know how to use Photoshop to reduce it.
Any comments on how to improve shooting in such conditions and how to reduce noise would really be much appreciated.

P.S. A day view from the same POV is here.

Ricardo

Hi Antonio
the flashy colored lights are most explicit in the scene seeing this cranes nicely composed as a graphical dance, I got the feel that a slight sharpening still was possible here. Fine to enclose the WS.
A good nightshot
greetings
Henk

Olá António,
You clearly have a very critical eye; I honestly don't see excessive noise. I even tried noise reduction in Photoshop (Strength 10, preserve details: 150, Reduce color noise 30%), and could find no significant change except some loss of detail. Many folks swear by Neat Image; you can download a trial version free. I used it for awhile; but I've been shooting RAW so I prefer processing my photos with Nikon Capture now.

Actually Norbert Woehnl (nwoehnl) sometimes adds noise; any way I thinkk travel throught work is the best way to lear n about the world. It seems to me that many TEers do travel with their work. The detail, framing and light management are all excellent in your photo; as you note, photos with high contrasts are very difficult.
Regards, Pat

Bom trabalho. Um abraço amigo,

Hey Antonio,
I'm not sure whether you agree with me or not but your job sounds so incredibly interesting and exciting. Are there things you are not allowed to take pictures of? Would that me some sort of spying??
Thanks for giving us all the possibility of seeing something most of us won't get entrance to.

Zeca

Hi Antonio
Nice shot, and the daylight shot from same position is a good idea.
And it is nice to see work photos here as well.
The rig looks like the ones in denmark, but i guess it will be the same all over the world.

Hi Antonio,
Despite the difficult light conditions with the flood lights staring down at you, the picture has come out well. You can try NeatImage software (compatible with Photoshop) for removing noise. It is pretty effective and is freely downloadable.

Boas
Carlos Ariza

I like this shot Antonio, and I think you've done well considering the difficult lighting conditions. The derrick is well framed by the two cranes.
Its refreshing to see something a bit different to the usual pretty pictures, I think your shot is very interesting.
I think a good way to give this shot more impact would be to take it a little earlier when the sun had gone down but there was still some light and colour in the sky. The mixture of artificial and natural light always works well.
Cheers,
Ben

Hi Antonio. Great image, I love the symmetry of this shot. The squares and lines in the foreground give the shot a good depth also. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Paul.

Francisco

Hi, Antonio!
This is the nice symmetry shot. Good compo and evening lights.
I think that day view is less interesting.

Vika

Fernando.
